The 77 pinto squire wagon I aquired this weekend has a 2.8. Has a noise coming from left hand cylinder head.  A tick like a lifter out of adjustment.  Are these noisy motors?  Any luck a valve adjustment will quiten it down?  Motor is slick as a button other than tick.  Going to put valve cover gaskets on this weekend and check valve adjustment.  I've got a motor manual that says get #1 tdc adjust, rotate 120 degree each time following firing order.  Seems pretty easy to me.  I guess I'm going to run motor till something happens to it of I find a 302.

These motors are solid lifter engines so the valves do need adjustment. Follow instructions in a shop or Chilton's manual and the ticking noise should go away. A lot of people did not realize these were solid lifter enginse so the valves were not adjusted as needed.

When I worked at the dealer back in the 70s most people thought they were just nosy engines , the 1600 , and 2.0 pinto engine had to have valve adjustment also , but most were never done , the bronco II up until 85 had the 2.8 also , next door neighbor had one and believed his dumb buddy's that the lifters were going bad and the engine was going to blow up any day , show him how to adjust the valves and do it every 15k miles , not every 60k , I adjust mine every 10k ,
