Shelby Pintos...
« on: April 19, 2021, 08:59:13 AM »
I am sure some of you are aware that there were Shelby parts available in the 1970s for the Ford Pinto.  Is there anyone out there that has a Pinto with these Shelby parts that were installed during that time?  I saw this on eBay, and the literature is rather pricy, but it may be of interest to those with the Shelby-equipped Pintos, or one who wants to make a Shelby clone out of a Pinto:

Could you in more detail describe the Shelby connection to the brochures in the ad?

A friend of mine had a Spearco Pinto (image below) back in the 70's. It was purported to be George Spears personal car. Later when the Turbo let go it was converted to a 289 and from there..., who knows. Back then there was not the interest in "specialty" cars there is today. For me and my friends (in our late teens/early 20's) these were  "manufactured" hot rods akin to a trophy wife. Real men built (modified) their own cars. Probably the mindset of the "Tuner" crowd today.

45+ years later I see things differently now and grasp the uniqueness of these specialty cars.

I don't believe that Carol Shelby had anything to do with Pintos or Group II products. At least I can not find a link between the two.

Perhaps it is that Shelby developed parts for the Mustang II and as an afterthought they were stated to also fit the Pinto? So, not intentionally Pinto built but adaptable in some cases???

That would be a good guess...I seem to remember thumbing through different catalogs during that time, including the Spearco firm...the other one I recall was the one with a logo using a striped roadway to outline the letters of the company...I cannot recall the name of the company, but I think it had an I as one of the letters, but I could be wrong.

I think the seller is just trying to get hits off putting "Shelby" in the header. I don't see anything in the brochure about Shelby.
