found out last week that the PARTS STORE in myrtle beach is closing down .it opened the doors in 1950 .GEORGE the owner is 93 now and has been working there by himself for some time now.they put an oreilleys and autozone nearby but whenever someone would go to them carrying a bucket of trailer bearings, they would end up at the PARTS STORE.you know what i mean.there is a full machine shop in the back ,all of the equipment is still there and in working order, he is trying to get rid of the parts and tooling before the new owners take over .they used to work on the intimidators race motors there before he got the name.i went down this past weekend to say bye to george and see if i could help.i did leave with some parts for my car at a deal.walking into the store is like going back to the good old days.but the times they are a changing.sorry to say.

Yep you're exactly right, there are no "PARTS STORES" anymore. Used to be that you were on a first name basis with the people there, they knew as much or more about a car as you did. Ask for a part and often times they would walk back and pick it up off the shelf. These days try asking for a power valve or a carrier bearing shim pack and see what kind of look you get...

Think of it this way: at least the place lasted 71 years. The last stores like that around here disappeared 10+ years ago. The closest thing is a Napa that supplies parts for the city's fleet of vehicles.
The local Autozones don't even have bog standard 14" round air filters and the clerks are barely able to find anything when it's actually on a shelf. If I have to go there, I've resorted to just handing them a part number that the website said was in stock. Even then there's only a 50% chance it's really in stock and a 50% they'll find one if it is.
