Ruby RedHot Is Back!
« on: December 17, 2017, 03:42:33 AM »
After over 6 months of not having my beloved Ruby RedHot, she is finally back! She went to a friend's house so he could replace her seals and gaskets and repair her badly cracked oil pan. I never realized I would miss driving a 4-speed til I got her back a couple weeks ago. She's bogging when I accelerate in first (I'm thinking she needs new points and condenser), but other than that she runs great! There was a crisis involving a wildfire last weekend where I had to pack her with my unreplaceables (like photos, documents, etc.) and enough room for two rambunctious dogs and a couple cat carriers, but fortunately the fires didn't get to my neighborhood, in spite of mandatory evacuations.  Hopefully I will be able to show her next year.  I miss taking her to the car shows!

That's real good news Becky for both you and Ruby!!

I was remembering something..... remember when you did that burn-out at the stop sign when we were going to the Christmas Party?!!

People were staring and I was laughing! Those were fun times.  I miss those Christmas Parties.
The only cool Christmas Party to go to.

Anything to keep her runnin'!

Glad to hear another Pinto is back on the road! The bog might be a deteriorated accelerator pump in the carburetor. They tend to shrink/crack if they sit unused and dry out.

Also glad to hear you escaped the fire unharmed. As big as the Ventura County "Thomas" fire is, and burning within 25 miles of here the winds blew the smoke out to sea and except for a smoky trail on the western horizon it was hard to notice except for the news.

Enjoy the ride!

If Ruby is a 2.0L (71/74 Pinto) the problem may very well be the setting of the points gap. For some reason the 2.0L Pintos would bog when the gap of the points got to close. If I remember right the points should be with a .015 gap. When you set them make sure they really are .015 and not any smaller and please take a look at the part that rubs on the shaft because you may need new points (correct term should be point and not points). Go for it Becky. I know you can do it! Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year too young lady.

Ruby is a 1.6L.

I'll bet the points are the same as a 2.0L.

A Kent is a Kent, but a EAO might have a different drive. Maybe a Pegasus catalog search is in order?

My Mistake Dick, I meant a SOHC Pinto EAO which is the 2.0L Capri /Pinto motor. The Other designations for EAO apply to a bunch of Ford engines.

I'm thinking it's the points. My friend said they were toast (but I had TWO brand-new sets in the trunk. He could've done them when he put the motor back in. Oh well. ) I have set her points before. Hopefully tomorrow I can get them replaced.  Because of the PITA HOA, I can't do it here.  >:(    She also makes soft backfire pops under the hood.  Mostly I have to remember she needs time to warm up before I can tool away in her.  Now that she's red again and not faded pink or "orange" from dirt and oxiidation, I get lots of happy rubberneckers and thumbs-up! One small child yelled out the window that his Grandma (who was driving the car) loved my car! lol ;D

I really had lots of problems with early Pintos points too! I think the points need to be set at .015 gap and that is a must!!!! What ever the book calls for. Set the points as wide a gap that it will run with. The Pintos will run with the points closer but when you move away from a stop the engine will fall on its face, then catch ok and run ok until the next stop. Easy fix. Becky

Right. Now I have to get the Pinto (and the points/condenser) back to my friend's place... so I don't get fined for "working on my car at my own house". I HATE HOAs!
