Title: power steering?
Post by: waldo786 on July 03, 2012, 05:05:53 PM
Our '76 Wagon has Power assisted steering, but I'm wondering if there ever was a point the P/S was standard on these cars or if it was always an option?  Thanks!  Ordered new carpet today for it as well so I'm hoping it fits!

always an option, never standard I do believe...

I checked... the 1980 bobcat still listed power steering as an option...

Very interesting, thank you.  A little bit surprised that it was still an option especially in the later years.  What are they like to drive without the power steering?

They can be a hassle when parked but when moving no problems at all. Even still it isn't too hard to steer when parked compared to bigger cars

Shoulda mentioned the major reason why they did not come standard with power steering is because the Pinto was a basic car no frills. If people wanted power steering they got a more expensive model with it already on or ordered one with it. To the day the last Pinto was made it was a basic car promising good transportation for what you paid for, much similar to when the first one rolled of the assembly line in mid 1970 as a 1971 model.

Makes sense, I guess people weren't used to all the creature comforts we can expect to come standard now.  That was one of the more expensive projects for my old Mustang - retrofitted it with power rack and pinion steering.  Although it's crazy how cheap power racks are for these cars, wish I could say the same for it.  Seems like my grandpa went all out with our Pinto - its got power steering (which is great), and air conditioning although it isn't working.  It's crazy to think about it.  I mean how hot has it been all over lately and imagine being in a car with no power steering or air conditioning.  Maybe it's just warmer now though because of global warming? :)
