Title: Ponies Dreamin' in the Barn
Post by: Pintosopher on October 27, 2017, 12:19:06 PM
Was just cruising thru the Burton Power web site, It's my candy store for the Pinto and it couldn't fail to cheer my hopes & dreams ;D
Perhaps we should have a USA liaison with them to beef up their market share. Why should the Escort and Cortina folks have all the Fun? Maybe our webmaster could plug in a UK to Dollar converter so we could jump when the exchange rate works in our favor :D
Those Simpson headers make me need a bib to get thru a browsing session :P Even the Zetec and Duratec complete engines section has my Hillclimb hormones raging with even the mildest at 180 HP with IR EFI!
It's time to build Retro Pro Street Import fighters with engine swaps of the 4 cylinder breed. Oh we'll always have NOS preservationis ts, but that's a separate market. Perhaps a repop Biz will arise from the doldrums and we'll be driving quick Cars and laughing all the way to the Barn. Paul Ramsey has begun this trend, and it will be an epic to behold in print when done. Why should Ken Block have all the fun?

Pintosopher it's a Friday, and another west coast Haze envelopes the Brain, Purged by the thoughts of Speed on parade

 Weigh in, that's why you're here 8)

Paul Ramsey's Pinto is as close to perfect as one can get. But it was not easy as he has been working on the car for over 20 years. Let us all hope it will be finished soon.

Joe! Thank you for posting a picture of my old red Pinto again. Makes me want to go out to the shop and get to work on my 80 Pinto. Well its only 30 this morning so I'll have to think about this again in March. Thanks again.

Sweet! That second Pinto down is my kind of race car! Something must be wrong with me.

Jack! That white Pinto has been a race car since you were born. Or close to it. Its a 2.0L of course with bike carbs. Its mostly used for autocross's in the NW. The first time I saw a picture of it there was a view of the exhaust under the car. 3 inch's all the way from the engine to the rear bumper. Was the best looking tailpipe I ever saw but sadly too big. I think he has made a smaller pipe now for more torque for autocrossing.

Dick, I'm glad to hear it's still running! To me the cars people build and modify themselves in their garage or shop, have so much more personality than high dollar builds, for people who never even work on the car.

Pintosopher, please keep the pictures coming!

Graveyard Carz is a television show on at 7pm eastern on the Velocity channel. They specialize in restoring really tore up old Mopar muscle cars from the 60's and 70's. They're located in Springfield, Oregon about five miles from where Keith lives in Eugene. Pretty good show, all Mopar, and a lot of details.

P.S.
The owner's a bit nuts!

Jack , I tend to agree, my least satisfying conversations come from talking to a " previous owner built this one" driver. But not everyone is a true gearhead in this world of IT laden economics.  I'll keep digging for new images, my gallery needs work to draw more from.

Took me 3 years to build my Boss 302 Mustang and only 1 year of racing it to go broke. It used up a set of slicks every race and a half. Even the year old ones cost me $300 a set each time. The high dollar boys had a new set every race. I did out last them by driving with my head and not my foot. I ended up second in points for the year. I raced the car 11 times in that one year plus I made the field for a Trans Am race but could not start because of a broke rear end. Say la vee for sure.

Joe! Did I tell you that on the Larson Rock club web site that it said that this years hill climb most likely would be the last one. Insurance is most likely the problem. You better get your Pinto up and running before there's no where to race it.

As always, I couldn't agree more. The reality is until the laws of economics improve in my favor, the Pinto remains in a Coma under its custom car cover in a storage unit. I air up the tires and dust it off and wonder when this California Ageism dynamic will cease. For to use it , I would need evenings and Weekends off and Bucks, Lots of Bucks! So for now , the other two cars get my budget, and my sore muscles and joints.  The politics of the lefties erasing our fun goes on and on.... :-\

Pintosopher, Not quite put out to pasture.... ;)

I only need to walk about 50 feet to be in the pasture here. The problems in California will NEVER go away in our life time. My parents were smart enough to get us out of California while I was still in high school. That was about 1950 and the state was wonderful back then. But the writing was on the wall even then. I hope you and your family leave while you can. We need all the Pinto owners to be happy in their golden years.

That would almost require 6 lucky #s and a truck from Reliable carriers and another from U-Haul (at least 28 ft, ) and a serious place to call Home :)

Your welcome here any time here in the Ozark mountains. No smog, little crime, cheap gas, country living, cheap cost of living, a really nice place to retire. My son just moved back from Phoenix with all of his race car machine shop, race car, household items, in two big U-Haul trucks and his race car trailer. Did it on one week in. Its easyer than you think. I have done it every 15 years or so, but now I'm here till the end.

I have three problems that keep me from moving:

1. I have issues where my hands/feet get and stay cold from Oct. thru May - even in So. Cal. .

2. There are four mosquitoes in California - they all know where I live. Most of the rest of the USA I'd be a pin cushion.

3. My wife's family has been here for five generations going back to 1850. It is hard to move that which is firmly planted in the earth.

As wackadoodle as California can be other areas of the country have their own issues.  I'm still allowed to go to church, was able to home school my kids and being 50 miles outside of down town LA smog is not really an issue. I'm 1/2 hour from Malibu and the mountains (red X marks the spot).   I'm trying to make the best of it in spite of the "difficulties."

Well the temp here has been in the 60's all month long with the nights in the 40's. I have never seen or heard a mosquitoes here in the 17 years we have been here. I can understand your not wanting to move from your ideal location. I've been up and down your costal highway several times in my life time. I have lived in 35 states since I was born due to being a Navy brat and my moves due to work or lack of. It looks like you have made the best of it. Enjoy and have a great turkey day.

Yes, my brother lives in Orangevale. So I'm familiar with the area.  Better than Rancho Cordova where there were thefts, vandalism, and even a 12 year old kid murdered where he use to be. And even RC was the safer suburbs compared to down town Sacramento.

Oddly enough Thousand Oaks is often deemed in the top three for safest cities in the USA with population over 100,000 - and yet I don't always feel safe here. But then I live in the worse part of town where a sub 1,000 Sq. Ft. home sells for "only" $550,000 - and comes with a cracked/displaced slab because there is no re-bar (expansive soil). The price of Paradise.

Things will shift dramatically as the last of the Aerojet/Rocketyne jobs leave RC. Folsom has annexed the acreage south of Hwy 50 to Eldorado County line, 2000 new residences and 8K new residents, My 50yr old  1100 sq ft rental home is selling for 410k if remodeled in Central Folsom (Homeless zone district). and the end to the escalation isn't leveling off. When my family left California in 1950 it was really was paradise even in LA. No gangs, few ill eagles, only small problems. Now look what 67 years has done. Its a completely different country now. At one time the people moving in was greater than the people moving out. It is now reversed with more people moving out than moving in. Say la vee.

According to Fred (RIP wizard) and Jennifer D she was brought back to life and required a makeover to become employable again. Dreamboat Annie is a virtual employee alive in many minds of folks from the Pinto World of the past. Well, Hmm, Haven't seen "Annie" in the Real world since Fred & Joy brought her along on the trip to Sacto before he passed away. Most of my images came from Fred & Co down south at the "yard". She ("Annie") is an identity, Myself , Fred and other Anonymous folk gave to the "entity " When she under went the Revival as Fred's PR person for Pinto World. All of the other images have cryptic origins and rival the ancient Sea Scrolls in value to the ignorant, and aloof personage. All of the other images in My presence, are from the Visit from Fred & Joy. We had a bunch of fun with the concept and now, Who Knows?  ::) Annie did Visit her Friends at PintoGirl's home in Sacto too ;D

Twas the Night before Christmas, and all through the Barn,
All the gearhead were stirring, all told was the Yarn
The clock would tock and follow with a Tick,
The Monitor was glowing , PCCA stuff from Dick..
The wrenches were hung on the Tool chest with care,
Not a one was missing, no one would take the dare..
When all of a sudden , there rose such a clatter,
Annie had dropped a tray, there was beer in the Batter
The looks from the folks attending the event,
Were tough on the eyes, and the Smiles kinda bent
Then into the Room , came a sense of huge dread,
Clyde brought more kegs, and a container of tough bread
All settled when the dippin sauce came,
The flavor was magical, and not even a bit lame
So think as the season, descends on your Brain,
It brings on the goodness, like a faster freight train!

The Season is alive , with the looks of the many
You think of those prices, and wonder by the Penny
The Vans race through the neighborhoods quickly,
The Security cams are many, and the residents prickly
The spirit of giving has the world in a trance,
People zip by in the malls, many in Skinny pants
Think carefully when you give out the  list,
Santa knows best and you must not be pissed
So look at the life , and count those Blessing,
It's better than you think, Karma not be Messing ;)

So the Dreamin continues...
 Take a Pre 76 Pinto and design the ultimate Low cost Inflation fighting Ford Pinto;
What would it entail? Can it be insured properly and driven daily?
Will it be economical to drive, and quick enough to meet the demands of 150HP econobox traffic?
And most importantly will it be classy enough to bury the stereotype of the" Boom mentality"
These are the strategic pony thoughts of a driver that needs to fight back, and not buy the Climate Change cars of the eco-agenda overlords in CA,

Dream no more. Jack (one 2.3 4 me) has such a Pinto. Lite weight, wide tires, lite flywheel, 4 barrel carb, header, race ignition, etc, etc. Nip cars look out! Its insured and driven daily. 150 HP? Well maybe some day. And the beat goes on, and the beat goes on.

Hmm I lit someone's Stuffing a bit! ;D
Let me clarify; At this time only pre 76 Pinto's are smog exempt, so you can't be creative with the newer cars to bury that issue. Earlier cars aren't subject to the CA parasite smog check, newer Pintos you won't be changing, unless you really want to go through a re-cert process with a referee station. All pre- OBD2 cars are subject to the dreaded Dyno BAR97 test. The visual inspection will catch you if the rollers don't. Even if you are able to improve the emissions and power to boot, you'll be disqualified as a resident operator.
I personally believe the SOHC Pinto (2.0l EAO & 2.3 Lima) can be made to provide at least 130hp with aftermarket parts and careful tuning, (even better emission than Stock too) .  Until these (76-80) cars are allowed to  be included in the exemption for Classic vehicles, you'll be stuck with that cost and the grief that the emissions equipment imposes on you. Write your local state representative, and insist this 30+ years rolling exemption be re-instated.
As far as cost per mile, it's got to be cheaper than a new KIA if you factor in the insurance ,registration and maintenance cost of the newer car. Forget the Air bags, that's for Loons and Politicians.
Performance, my 72 on 92 octane gas and all the mods on the engine will eat some newer cars for lunch up to 80 mph ,( Even out dragged a 5.0L Mustang from the 80's ( we ran out of road!)  And yes ,if I was easy on the pedal 20+ mpg was doable.
Of course, if you Move to AR ,as Dick suggests, the universe will reward you.

Up until 1999 or so, cars & trucks in Arkansas had to be inspected for brakes and tires. Now there is no longer any kind of inspection any where in the state. My 80 Pinto has no cat, no smog piping under the hood, Ranger cam, 2.3L Mustang cast iron header, and I'm sure there's more. All of these mods are a good reason to stay out of California.

No ordinary Prius for this chick!!! No sir!
I'll be green :P if you ever cave and buy one of those Kilowatt Turds.
"Honey the power is out! Did you charge the car? No dear, and the House battery is dead too!" Where's that electric bicycle we bought last year? I must telecommute or show up in person, Dang! WiFi is down too, My cell won't work! ARRRRGH". :o

Those injector stacks look so good, My uncle ran a 150 class hydro back in the 60's. Six injectors, six zoomie headers, on a 144c.i. Falcon inline six cylinder, in front of the driver. He stored it in my parents garage, and when he started that puppy, the whole neighbor knew it! Sweet childhood memories!

Most people think a Pinto is just one step above the flintstone flyer. It is our job to spread the word. Don't be shy! Be aggressive! Tell the world how good our little Pinto's are.

I almost went into debt to buy a Solo 2 Capri that Komush & Wolf had retired  from Solo racing . It had bodywork and a warmed over V6 like the racer in the image below. My Pinto budget was keeping me sane and I now wish I could have bought it anyway.

Hmm, although Turbo's are nice, I prefer my Engines to be "stacked"  :D And the sound must be delirious when it comes on the "cam". The only "reeking"  I prefer comes from spent fuel at least 104 octane ::)

Another Friday passed, Serious momentum was seen. The Hay truck has arrived on the estate and the Stables will gladly stock the Barn with Feed..
In a dream, the decorations of the barn will be sending Joy to the many ponies in the corral. Will the Frolicking of the herd overwhelm the gray skies of indifference and apathy? We shall see as the many will have a shot at glee and celebration, fate has a way with the virtuous and humble.
Now we shall see as the twin post of life raises the vehicles of our entertainment to start a year with expectation of accomplishment and compassion.

Looks like a view from "CARS". If that's Jennifer in the picture, she sure is tall and trim. Just right for driving a Pinto. Its hard for large people to fit in a Pinto. My son is 6-3 and 290 lbs and doesn't fit in the Pinto. I'm 6-1 and 185 lbs and just do fit. I've gone to a 13 1/2" steering wheel and changed the angle of the steering column, plus I removed two of the baby buggy bumpers that go between the bottom and top section of the seat to allow the top to lean back more. Can you say loooo rider! I've lowered the car as much as I can and still make it in and out of my driveway. I may end up with a skid plate under the engine like the rally cars. The streets here in nw Arkansas are really good and smooth. Lots of lowered ricers here. Ricers are much harder to lower than a Pinto. Pintos are really easy to lower as long as you don't go crazy and put it on the deck. I've only lowered mine about a 1 1/2 all the way around, so there's a lot left if I want too. With a spoiler on front and back plus the wide wheels and tires it really looks like it ready for the roads in the Ozark's.

I was fiddling around a little bit with the vacuum lines.  Why not, my guess is as good as anyone's!!!  I don't think anyone really knows about where they all go.
One was laying on top of the radiator recently.  I have been trying to figure it out since.  My guys fixed an oil leak and I think things got a little mixed up.

She was running.  It was kind of funny, she let me know if she did not like what I did!!!  Musical vacuum lines!  Russian Roulette

I stand alone with my car problems.

More rustling in the shadows of the Stables, A whiff of fresh fuel vents from a evap canister in a pony recently hobbled in the last stall. A draft of cold air disperses the vapor and the sun rises slowly as dawn moves into view. More winter settles deeper into the nearly shortest day of the year as it is a busy season for holiday activities.
The next moon will gleam through the skylights of many domains, Stars twinkling, Frost drawing the woods into a icy embrace. The Day of the Big Guy is nearly at hand, and the riders have a massive kettle of Christmas Stew cooking in the Bunkhouse. The Cook has made a large batch of butter cookies and the Milk is chillin for the visitation. A wood stove glows in the corner as the heat brings the laughter and other musings .
A Hallmark moment for the many riders and their Steeds :D

A lot of Pintos end up racing in mini-stock when they were the car to race. Use to see 20 or more at the local dirt track. Now the racers have moved on to later made cars and in lots of cases, ricers. I'm afraid there is really not very many Pintos left in the country. I'll guess that there might be 500 Pintos left but not all are road worthy. Just more reasons to keep your Pintos in good shape and do the car shows to spread the word. They should be a collector car along side Mustangs.

The Corral is quiet, the frost on the Fence rails crackles in the thawing dawn. The sounds of the Wild Turkey in the woods, the orange blur of the Red fox as it pounces on a Mouse. All the sounds of the deepening of the winter days, and a season of restful reflection. A shimmer in the air as the fireplace chimney vents its heat to a vapor plume ,wafting across the valley sky.
Deep in the bowels of the Barn, the ponies are feeding on the sustenance of the many Trickle Chargers glowing in the shadows. In the upstairs loft, the stable master works feverishly on a new idea for the Herd, drafting a design for the resurrection of the Metal, horsepower to the wheels, and swift transit across the landscape of the world. More than the crowds can fathom, a passion of incessant activity to improve, upgrade and add value. Only the informed understand , and will follow every achievement.
A near scriptural reset of a myth that could revive a breed of compact equine motoring enthusiasm... ;)

The chill was evident coast to coast, But the Fragrance of good will and pine was everywhere. A semi pulled up and began to unload a pair of hoists for the Stables. The herd were out to pasture while the Elves began to assemble the Lifts of good composure and repair. The next truck brought the Building in a KD form from the Land of Tuff and it was laid out to
assemble around the slab with piles of fasteners and supplies. More elves arrived with a forklift and Boom crane. A massive catering van showed up and the Smell of Southern Breakfasts was wafting through the valley. Hot cocoa was steeping, coffee a brewing, and the cinnamon was intoxicating. A song was ever present on the lips of the elves " Building to the Maxes , They lowered my taxes!" .  Now as the day slowly warmed , the head elf went half buff and the lady elves sat stunned at the gazebo :o Life took a turn on this spiritual cascade of good will, and the many were comforted.
Another day , celebrating what can be , and what should be.

Pintosopher, Dreamin on the seasonal energy, wishing on a Star
 Merry Christmas to all :)

The Day after the food coma.. More elves crashed in the New shop,  hanging from the lifts and cord reel drops. Overdosed on peppermint schnapps and stuffed with Christmas cookies. They all passed out in a spiritual nirvana. The Ponies were rubbing the tires on the curbs and doing donuts in the snow. One cowboy with a Hoonigan sticker was catching long drifts while circling the ranch driveway..  All was as it should be, and the echoes of the Big Man were still ringing in the stable and bunkhouse.
A spiritual renaissance for all the riders and glee for the ponies as they rec'd the new fluids in the shop.. New Years was looming and the ponies were a grooming..
Silent and holy night indeed ,for all the residents of the Ranch..

Ahh the New Year Cometh..
The Young Colts are kickin the hooves of change, but the alpha Stallion gives no room in the Stable. Change will come, and the stable master will keep the peace in the ranch. The elves left on a hay wagon with a Hangover cure strapped in a barrel to the tailgate. Their job done for now, and the Bunkhouse is alive with New Years expectations from the Hands.
A semi pulls into the driveway.. The forklift powers up and the renaissance begins..

The frozen dawn greets a New Year, crackling are the sounds of ponies on the gravel driveway. A rustle in the hay signals the ranch is coming to life. Vapor rises as the stablemaster pours the first bucket of Wash soap. The stove heats yet another pot of Coffee. All the signs that renewal can be just a few months away, and the shop lights flicker as the ballasts surge with current.
Time is moving, but the still of the day's dawn appears suspended, a pause of infinite consequence. Another opportunity for the herd to gather and storm the prairie awaits, and the gates will be opened for the restless ponies again. So as the sky warms the roads of life, may your rides be long ,exhilarating, and safe.
Be wary, the feed truck comes this week , and the manure spreader is under repair :D

Pintosopher, Scribe to yet another tale of equine nirvana, gear changes at your pleasure ;)

The Skies are in flux, temps driving the ponies to huddle in the stable, windows hazed over cold due
All will be quiet, and the chimneys puff wood combustion, the costs we rue
The burp of an air gun has bounced the silence, wheels removed for Snow tire replacement
The cold on the kneecaps , is proof of cement
The clink of chains signals traction must be sought
And there's Pizza  for dinner, ready to be bought
The stars will gleam and the chill resurged
All the horses warm and the stall manure  be purged
Riders in the bunkhouse, we'll watch for their presence
The Suds will coat the tables, with cheery effervescence.

Fog has settled in the Valley,
All quiet on a Sunday morn
Stableman counts the ponies, ever looking at the tally
A rustle in the back, as a newbie lights up
More coffee in the hand's morning cup
It'll be a mid January story, as the country tries to thaw
More cold is coming though, and the wind will be raw
The parade of lights has lit up the stalls,
Trickle chargers glow, and heat up the walls
A burp of the coffee signals a new day,
The bunkhouse hands , have Gran Turismo to play

Pintosopher.. Pickled this season, but sober as a Judge eating fudge

Another frigid one and the riders are restless, ponies kickin the stalls... The stove roaring to heat the barn, many ideas circulating the rumor of a stampede in the Snow. The ranch foreman has ordered the Best in Rally rubber and the tire guy is siping the tread blocks for added traction.
Oversize flaps to protect the metal, and skid plates brought down from the loft, the rumor becomes reality. Compressors light up and the off road wheels are being mounted with fresh Grippy tires. Soon a pile of tractive rotating devices to be installed, are in the lift area.  The burp of Air guns and it begins to sound positively NASCAR in the main stable.
The snarl of Rally engines and smell of race fuel has filled the driveway, and the snow drifting begins. Roostertails pummel the windows of the Bunkhouse, and Heavy accents dominate the conversations. the main gate is open and the Haldas are reset for a Stage Stampede! Over a hundred miles of juice to burn up in sideways nirvana, the world is complete.. ;D

Yes, turn 6 Riverside Raceway. My favorite spot to sit. I think Dan is in turn six at this point in the picture, it's been a while.

Temps are Dippin' , the riders are Trippin', tires will be slippin' as the winter cycles through the ranch and the valley
In the Barn , the ponies are being groomed and prepped for the first signs of  spring. All things possible, but the reality of frost is ever present.
An new stove arrives and now the Barn heats up with Pellets and a fresh layer of tiles to keep the Hooves off the slab.
Another Service cart from a now defunct racing team rolls on the floor, moving to it's new home in the center of the barn. Loaded with Tools to keep the Hands busy in their maintenance of the Ponies, the gleam of new plating and Blued tempered steel has them mesmerized in awe.
The Cook hits the triangle and calls the crew to breakfast, the smell of Waffles , fresh Bacon & Eggs and Coffee is intoxicating. Cool, dry weather, means a busy morning, as the next storm arrives on Sunday.
USPS will be bring more parts and the future looks bright for the Shop Hare, a perpetual occupant in it's hutch in the back stall.
All quiet, for a weekend .. The hands will feast and plan the week.. ;)

Another Winter Weekend, More flakes are falling in some land on the prairie ..
We'll be watching as the ranch hands welcome the Racing season, new motivations to prep the ponies for a season of optimism. The benches are full of new tools and the crates of parts are awaiting the talents of the stable masters everywhere. The load of barrels of solvents and the other sundries are on pallets in the back of the barn. Coffee brewing on the Bench, and a few Service manuals open to the science of the fuel mix. Knowledge will pour like an expresso into the hands of the motivated, work shall be done.
Time for planning trickles in while the Tube dispenses Rolex updates, the Barn is in Zen mode, all is well.

A Sense of indignation roils across the Bunk House. The ranch is under assault with ever present Weather challenges, and the Ponies and the Hands are more than irritated. With the diversion of the racing world Speed weeks past, Now the anticipation for the pounding of the hooves across the prairie is kicking at the stalls. The use of the GranTurismo is reaching overload, Sneers have been traded as the attempts to dominate the terminals, leads to wry looks and more than a few cars taken to the lifts to burn off steam..
Soon the signs of spring will be ever present, Life will stage burnouts everywhere, the spirits of motorheads past will descend on the populace.. Serene driving style will follow and show circuits will begin..
Send the Pair o Dux out into the weather, the stable is for ponies , high and Dry 8)
