Pinto site is not dead
« on: January 03, 2019, 01:04:04 AM »

I haven't been here for two weeks or so. I see we have about 20 new members. Terrific. Last year there was speculation the site would close for lack of interest. The success of Facebook was blamed for the lack of visits.
When I joined 70 to 80 visitors was common. I could log in at 3AM and find 50 people here. It appears there is hope for us yet!

And yet there are some days when no one posts ANYTHING..., and many days where there are only one..., maybe two posts.  In fact, there seems to be far more posts welcoming people who joined than members posting.  And, frankly that seems odd??? Especially since many of the new people rarely if ever post.

So many good people WERE here but don't show up  (post) anymore. I'm still hopeful too but with far more guarded optimism.

And to stress the point made above it is now 48 hours since "joebob" made his original post and 36 hours since I replied..., and NO ONE else has posted on this! Yet in that time six people have joined..., but none have posted anywhere on this site. Are they giving away free toasters if people join???

It would take a free Iphone for most younger people. :P ;D

I remember the free to join stuff. And free glasses and other stuff when you bought gas. And S&H green stamps when you bought stuff.
Yes, I am old.  ???

I remember and miss those days too! I still use the "free" steak knives that my uncle got for buying gas. I was in my early teens and my uncle didn't want the knives so he gave them to me for my "hope chest." That really dates me! Remember the fun of the Sears's Wish Book? Thumbing through it as a kid and making your list for Santa? Now Sears is a dinosaur lumbering off to extinction.

I could spend HOURS with the Sears Christmas Catalog!!!  Its arrival was a big deal at my house.  Sad to see such a one-time giant of retail crumble.

I’d like to get back to the quite serious subject of this topic.  Every few days or weeks (like most members nowadays I think) I check to see what is going on on this site and it is most annoying to see the “recent posts” column filled up with  unnecessary “welcome posts”, and these push (for some) interesting posts far too soon off the front page,  and most will go by unnoticed.
I was wandering what was causing all these new member accounts, automated spam machines of some sort or real people that check in and leave forever directly afterwards.
I did some trials by putting search words in Google in browsers Firefox and Microsoft Edge, I chose words that would definitely result in a few fordpinto.com site hits, both for text and images, and there are plenty.
I would urge other members to check this for themselves, maybe your results will be different.
The very serious problem that I encountered, is that in most cases clicking the links to the fordpinto.com site doesn’t  land you anywhere near the post or image that you want to see.
You are most likely to either land on the home page, from which there is no way a guest could find the post he or she clicked on in the browser search results.
Or you hit one of an assortment of screens that tell you that a topic or board is missing, or is off limits,  or telling you to login or register an account.
I guess that some people are even so eager to get to the information they are seeking that they will register an account, and then are disappointed and leave because this gets them no closer to the image or topic they clicked on in the Google search results.
If the number of genuine new members is an indicator of the amount of people that really seek information on this site, and then hit a brick wall, than that deeply saddens me.
There is tons of valuable knowledge on this site, and the next generation can’t get at it.
This means that this site is not slowly fading away because of the average age of the core members, or F***book competition, but because of site access problems.

I agree with you 100+%. For a long time now I am baffled by the 5+ members added most every day and yet there is typically only one or two posts in 24 hours - sometimes none.

Right now it says there are 25 Guests and you (72 DutchWagon) and myself  (Wittsend) logged in. I find it interesting that Pinto's and Studebaker's had about the same numbers of total cars built. So, you are working with a similar sized car base. Yet on the Studebaker site in 24 hours there were 181 individual posts with 935 users and 77 logged in members.  Here, excluding the "welcomes" there are 2 posts, 25 users and 2 members logged in. I think that is a significant enough difference to ask "WHY?" The Studebaker site deals with (and complains about) Facebook too.  I think this site runs on "auto-pilot" and when the individual that owns it posts a handful of times a year you are left to wonder how much they are involved.

Good people leave because problems don't seem to get addressed. While I realize being here doesn't cost us anything..., and the work done by those involved is volunteered, does the site really accomplish its mission?

It may interest you to know that, while the welcome messages are generated automatically, each potential new member must be approved or rejected manually.  Because of problems with spam, nearly 100% of applications from outside the U.S. are rejected, and that accounts for more than are approved.  I do not deny membership to anyone without reason and foreign applicants are invited to email me and convince me they are legitimate in order to achieve membership but none ever have.

In regard to concerns about legitimate members joining and then not being able to access the information they want, that is a possibility.  My name is probably the most publicly identified with management here but my forte is not computers. Fortunately, we have other people in Administration who handle that.  My function is to monitor day-to-day operations.  It is a rare day, indeed, that I am not on the site multiple times.  As I said, the welcome messages are automatic.  The approval process is not, the deletion of spam and removal of spammers is not, nor is the reading of each and every post to make sure it does not contain offensive or non-family-oriented language or images.  I issue warnings to offenders, negotiate peace between disputing members, ban and remove habitual offenders, and field various and sundry issues that are brought to my attention through PMs behind the scenes.  Good, bad, or indifferent, it is NOT on autopilot.

Two years ago this site would not recognize my password. It would not reset my password or recognize my request for a new account with a new name. I was locked out for 2 months.
I knew the phone number of one member. I asked to use his account, then used it to appeal to management. They of course let me back in.
If not for my friend, I would be locked out with no way back. If it happened to me, perhaps others have a similar problem. I have no clue how computers work. Perhaps a mass email could be sent to dormmate accounts, asking if they are having problems getting in.

I was locked out of my original account and couldn't log back in. So I started a different account.

Gonzobobcat is the name on my old account.  I would like them to be merged.

As I explained above, I am not really very computer savvy and I have no idea whether we can do that or not.  PM Scott Hamilton and tell him exactly what you want.  If it's possible, I'm sure he'll do it for you.

I pop in from time to time haven't posted in months. I think i could be thrown in to the younger crowd at 35 be 36 in june. I think if
Tap Talk app was talked about or put on the front page on the website that you can access the forum from your phone and tablet might help some. I try and point new people on Facebook group to the forum when i can.

Your efforts are much appreciated.  When the 2016 Pinto Stampede made an overnight stop in my town, I treated the participants to a pizza party held at the local Ford dealership which also promised an opportunity to show off their Pintos.  Unfortunately, rain interfered with drawing a crowd but the visit and an interview with Norm Bagi were videoed and posted on the dealership's Facebook page.  I was surprised how many participants of the Stampede were associated only by way of Facebook and had no knowledge of this site.  The next morning I met them at their motel, handed out small PCCA magnets to the participants, and then joined the group for the drive from there to Carlisle.  Most non-members indicated they would soon be joining but, because we only require email addresses and usernames, I don't really have any way of knowing whether they did or not.  Thank you for sharing about us with the Facebook group.

I'm not sure exactly what you're saying... any new member who you see receives a welcome message is approved to post.  Those applicants who are rejected never receive a welcome message, nor is their chosen username ever seen publicly anywhere on the forum.

Frankly, I don't know whether we have one of those letter/number things or not; it's been nearly 12 years since I signed up and I'm not the one who does all the computer-related stuff.  I'm more in charge of member relations than anything else.
