Pinto on Top Gear episode
« on: February 22, 2012, 07:09:13 PM »
I just saw that Top Gear USA is doing a show featuring the most dangerous cars in America including a Corvair, Suzuki Samuri and our beloved Pinto. It looks like they will attempt to fix all the cars fatal flaws, so it should be good.  It'll be on History channel tues. Feb 12. 9/8C.

Not to de-rail the thread, but I absolutely despise the American top gear. The British version is so much better if you ask me.

Back on topic, that is cool what they are doing, I hope they do the mods correctly and not hack them up. I would cringe to see a Pinto hacked up for TV  :'(

I know somebody who watches the British Top Gear. Doesn't Jeremy Clarkson pronounce Prius as "pry us" and calls Mercedes-Benz cars "Mercs"? The only Merc I know is a Mercury! Chris loves that show, though... ::)

it gets better when you go to the filming.  saw the pinto in the lot of show cars and wondered what was up.

i would check it out once a season if you did not like it.  they are improving

they will most likely mess it up like they did with the maverick last season. they also started with a 75 and finished with a 73 small bumper  lets see if they  keep the same car for  all the tests. i did notice they do a demolition.

So I watched this show for the first time because of this post. I know this week wasn't supposed to be the pinto episode, but wanted to familiarize myself with the show. What a stupid waste of time. Driving a car with a while being distracted by device that delivers an electrical shock to the driver, how does that prove anything about the car?  Don't let these guys anywhere near a pinto.

PS how does one watch the British version of the show?

You can watch the original Top Gear on BBC America. I agree it is SO much better than our sorry version. TheStig gets no build up or drama at all.

And, in the UK, there aren't Mercurys, so Mercedes are referred to as Mercs.

The UK Top Gear is enjoyable, the USA one is "goofy". I saw an ad for todays Pinto/Corvair/Samarai segment, be warned the Pinto gets demolished. I wonder if Jeremy on the UK version ever got his Ford GT?

What a bunch of losers! You know they have nothing to offer when they pull out an old story (true or false) just to get some attention. (yes we all know how false these exaggerations are) What's next, are they gonna go to the old site where Geraldo Rivera exposed Willowbrook or will they go with Al Capone's vault? Keep going guys, you will be unemployed next year with this type of report and will have fallen way short of the Pinto's run.

Just watched the show. The flaws on the Corvair, poor handling, the Samari ,roll over, did not have to be faked. The Corvair spun out constantly, and the Samari rolled over on the race course. The Pinto they had to set on fire using who knows what. The Pinto was clearly superior!

I agree w/Dave- they really had to go out of their way to 'prove' the Pinto supposition... Not Impressed what so ever-

Goofy is a good word as well-

Still, I'm happy to see a Pinto on prime time TV- can't help that.

This show just stinks, the Brits should demand they change the name of the show to "this show stinks" The actors make you wonder just how bad were the people who did not get the job. Hey History Channel, cancel this crap. Never owned a Corvair, but raced one, great racer, currently roadrace a 2000 CC Pinto .  Pinto makes a great race car. Tell people it came standard with 5 main bearing engine, disc brakes, rack and pinion steering. Pinto is very easy to race, forgiving, no suprises (see Porsche). Lots of cheap parts. Draws big crowds

We should all boycott the  show on History Channel,  and its sponsors, The "stars" on this show are such losers, how were they chosen. They just STINK.  The "real" Top Gear show on  BBC America is great, too bad the American copycat on History Channel is sooooooooo awful

While I love the british Top Gear, Top Gear USA is such a horrible show. It's catered just as any other american "reality show" is. They picked out cast to "fit" the show. The original they pretty much already fit, and there really isn't any difference between any of their personalities when it comes to humor and criticisim. The most important thing I noticed right off the bat on this episode, is that the USA version follows more rumor and doesn't even TRY to get the facts straight. They didn't even really get it right when they tried to explain how the Pinto could ignite!

I won't ever be watching Top Gear USA again. As they say on the original Top Gear..."it is rubbish!"

I missed the entire show except for the last minute , because I forgot it was on,  Well lets just say there final comments was all I needed to hear to know the rest of the show was Crappy. I'm here to say my son came out of a rollover crash in a 79 Bobcat we were working on unharmed. So they don't know shizod on what these cars can take and people survive a crash.          IMG]http://i1244.photobucket.com/albums/gg580/rugernut1/DSC00005.jpg[/IMG]     And after scraping everything I  wanted off of the car, I sold the the leftovers to a guy for $250   Top the Top Gear..  They ought to be called  "Top Rears"
