Title: Pinto flying car
Post by: AndrewG on October 27, 2014, 10:03:39 AM
Came across this today.....

"So this seems like a good idea.....  A Flying Pinto Car/Plane
The craft, a Mizar Flying Car, was a Ford Pinto powered by a 300-horsepower Lycoming aircraft engine and using the wings of a Cessna Skymaster bolted to braces on the frame. The craft was also equipped with a car engine to drive on the highway.

Unfortunately, the flying machine had a catastrophic wing failure after takeoff on Sept 11, 1973, crashing and killing both on board.

Yes, the Flying Pinto exploded."

It was not a wing failure , it was a wing to body strut failure , so the whole mess like any car with no wing attached anymore hits the ground they all may exploade , or burn or etc,

There was actually a good bit of information about the Mizar project available via the homepage prior to this weekend's site updates - can't find it at the moment.  I'm sure it's not lost!  I always thought it was sort of strange that the Mizar crash occurred on the third anniversary of the Pinto's debut, which was September 11, 1970.  Unusual coincidence.

Pintony has the only surviving prototype (it never flew).  He had it at Knott's a number of years ago. There is information about it at cookieboystoys site.  I know most here know this, but I'm assuming the original poster did not.

I didn't write the details in the initial post, just copied the text in quotations. Saw it on line and thought it might be interesting.  Thanks for the comments.

Pintony was contacted by Beau Boeckmann of Galpin earlier this year and a deal was made... Beau / Galpin purchased the Mizar and has trucked it back to California to be restored and put on display with the rest of the collector cars they have.

Interesting.  I recall a number of years back he sold the green ("Roll'in in my Pinto") car.  Then it seemed shortly there after he acquired the Mizar.  At the time I assumed the sale was related to the purchase.  Maybe not??? Seems kind of sad he is now minus two Pinto's of notoriety.
