A few weeks ago I brought my car over to get the computor chip made for my car , last year I made a pull and found out the CFI was running real rich over 3000 rpm , this is a home made CFI made with parts , The CFI was off a 84 LTD with a 5.0 , the computor was out of a 90 bronco II with 2.9 , as was the crankshaft machined to fit the 2.8 , block was bored 40 over , so now a 3.0 , a comp cam and rare hooker long tube headers , pistons are out of a scorpio merker 2.9 , so i have 9 1/2 to one compresion , trans is a A4LD out of a Explore and a 2.9 ranger converter , ran well but knew the mixture was not right , found some people in New Orleans with a dyno that stills makes chips for the OB1 computor , had one made and the results came out fair , the corection to convert to flywheel Hp was a tad over 150 ,  at 4500rpm ,  torque was 205 at 2400 rpm , the tuner figured why , I advanced the cam timimg too much which tossed the map senser off the chart to run so rich , I built the car to tow a small camper and wanted all the low end grunt I could get , but opps I over done it and if I retard the cam some I could pick up more Hp , nope leaveing it the way it is , better gas milage and with cats it would pass 90s emissions , now to the drag strip to see what the new numbers are  ;D

Interesting on the cam timing. How much did you advance it?  My daily driver is a 2000 Mazda Protege 1.6.  When I did the cam seals I modified the intake cam timing (filed the sproket and then backfilled the gap) to advance it 3 degrees. On the ignition timing I slotted the reluctor plate holes and went 4 degrees advanced. These were recommended for the Miata engine which is VERY similar. Nothing tripped up the computer (OBD II) as the ignition timing still thinks it is stock. The intake cam has a sensor, but I'm guessing that is only to clue the computer what cylinder should be firing and not a detector of out of perimeter cam timing. I have passed two California emmisions test since doing.

Anyway, the end result was not necessarily more overall power, but lets just say the car was "crisper" and more enjoyable to drive. Throttle response was far more immediate. And I still use regular fuel!  Seems like a lot of safety was designed into the factory tune. Also by putting the torque up higher in the RPM range Mazda can compete with the HP comparisions of other makes. But, in the end shifting to the lower RPM spectrum makes for a better car.

The over cam timing was kind of done by accident , when I machined the nose of the 2.9 crankshaft to install the gear I had to cut a keyway for the gear , put it all together and used a timing wheel to zero in the gear to the cam , found it was a degree or so on the retard side , ordered a full set of off set keyways from burton power in England , set it up with 4 degrees advance with the stock cam , later before I put the heads on I replace the cam with a comp cam but did not recheck the lobe centers , later (after the engine is in the car and running ) my cam sheet say it has 4 degrees advanced timing  :o     may chang it in the future when I change over to the ranger/Bronco II water pump set up  which I must change to timeing cover for it to bolt on ,  for everyones info the stock pinto 2.8 water pump carries only one belt to drive it and the fan along with the alternator , if the belt breaks or comes off it will run hot quickly and bust the heads , ask me how i know , ford saw this problem when they were going to use them in the Ranger , so a redisign to a larger water pump bearing and three pulley set up to drive the pump in case one belt breaks , a plus side is you can now have a light weight fan clutch that cuts down the noise and pick up a few HP , hope this helps someone , later Blaine
