Nice, looks like they only feature three cars a month. Congrats on being selected.

Yes, regarding the font going small!!! UGGGHHH!!! I encounter that here at the PCCA and the AMC Forum. It seems to happen if I backspace more than two times and randomly when I Cut N' Paste something. And often it does not show in the typing panel, only after you click Post. It has been like that for all the time I've been here.

It has to be in the software. Frustrating, but the workaround is highlighting the whole text AFTER YOU HAVE FINISHED TYPING and then select a font size. That can only be done if you select the "Reply" at the bottom, right of the previous post as you can not change the font in the "Quick Reply." Don't even bother trying to onsey/twosy trying to fix the font.  You will only get frustrated. Highlight EVERYTHING and then select the font size.

Have never watched Young Sheldon. Is that show sort of a spin off of the Big Bang Theory?  Never watched that one either.
Our pinto is "stinking adorable," as one admirer said.  However, we're still dealing with driveability issues, which is going on nearly a year now. Same ole' same ole': Engine feels sluggish or flat on acceleartion, hesitates.  It's not actually stalling on us at this point, and the problem is random.  When any mechanic drives it, it drives fine and doesn't act up for them, of course.  Grrr.. >:(  Last time I was at 30 mph and the mph started to sink to 20, then 10 mph, even after giving it gas.  It sort of rebounded and then drove fine back to the house. We're learning that keeping an old car running reliably can be a money pit. We're losing confidence in the place we have taken it. We stopped in today and had another talk with the store manager, who said if we bring it back in, the owner himself/a master mechanic will look at it.  We spent $700 a few weeks ago and they fixed what they thought was the problem, a small fuel/air leak at the carb.  Problem remains. Another option to get to the root of the issues is to join the local Auto club. These members are motor heads who work/restore on their own cars, but we were assured that if we joined, some members would come alongside us to help solve and trouble shoot this problem. Dues are $40 a year, $5 a day to use their lift. But it means joining a club, with all its dramas and politics, if you know what I mean.  I'm not a joiner kind of person, but, if it could solve the driveability issues we're having, then...maybe we should join.......

In answer to davidpinto's question, yes, I saw the Pinto on "Young Sheldon".  Yes, caravan3921, "Young Sheldon" is a prequel to "The Big Bang Theory".  The premise of TBBT never appealed to me but my sister absolutely loved it.  She and I never saw eye to eye on anything so I never gave it any thought.  About a year after she died, my wife and I hit a dry spell of new things to watch on television and I jokingly remarked, "We could always give "The Big Bang Theory" a shot... Beth loved it."  She said, "Why not?" and I purchased Season 1 Episode 1 On Demand.  I only bought the one episode because I was SO sure I would dislike it.  Boy, was I wrong!  I laughed so hard I had tears rolling down my cheeks!  When the show was over, I purchased the entire first season and we binge-watched the series all the way through nine seasons before we caught up with the actual broadcasts, and finished it out on a week to week basis.  When "Young Sheldon" was first announced, I couldn't even imagine it being a success but, having been proved wrong before, decided to give it a shot.  It surprised me; it's actually good.  Casting can be a real issue with prequels but they truly nailed the younger versions of the central characters.  I truly enjoy the show.

Thx for that info, and when we hit a dry spell of what to watch on TV, we'll have to give those 2 shows a try.  Right now, however, we've just discovered John-Boy and The Waltons!! We never watched it back in its day.

Wow... if you're at the beginning of "The Waltons", those shows are about fifty years old!  The Hamner family, on which it is based, lived in Schuyler, Virginia about forty miles from where I live in Waynesboro.  Most of the family has died out now, but back when the show first started, Earl Hamner Jr.'s mother still lived in the homeplace with some of his brothers and sisters having homes nearby.  At some point, a "Waltons" museum was created in the old schoolhouse there and it became quite a tourist attraction, with frequent cast reunions and other festivities.  I haven't been there in fifteen or so years and truly don't know whether any of that still exists or not, but it was quite the thing in its day!

For people who are really into The Waltons search "Judy Norton" (Mary Ellen) on You Tube. She does a lot of relatively short videos on the show that are rather informative. You will be surprised at how 'in the city of LA' Waltons Mountain really was.

thx for your inquiry and interest!
We're discussing it today, and tomorrow will call the last shop where we took it in.  (I think we're not leaning to joining the auto club, just because of politics, safety courses you have to take, etc. etc.) The owner of Allen's repair shop in Sun City West, where we took it last time, is a 'master mechanic" but is usually not on site and doesn't do the work.  Two other mechanics are on site, but last time the pinto was in, the mechanic who looked under the hood didn't know what the ignition module was, and the shop manager, not a mechanic, insisted the fuel sending unit just measures gas level and nothing more.  These people just aren't familiar with pintos.  But the store manager says the owner/master mechanic needs to look at it. We have to coordinate getting the pinto in shop with the 'master mechanic' looking at it.  This time we want to talk with the owner/master mechanic ourselves.  Our sense is that he is spread too thin: 2 repair shops, plus a restoration shop.   We took the pinto out this evening and it behaved the same way, hesitating, but at least it doesn't kill.  We drove it this evening in the dark, less traffic, and parked it away from all the other cars in the grocery store lot, and when walking out after shopping, a running car was pulled/parked along side of it, apparently looking at it.  Funny...even in the dark, in a lot with no lights, people spot a pinto!

Something to consider on the drivability issue is vapor lock.  I had this issue on an EXP I restored.  It acted as you described.  I hooked up a fuel pressure gauge and installed clear (blue) fuel hoses so I could see what the fuel pressure did when I experienced the flat acceleration condition and saw the pressure drop from about 7 psi to essentially 0 before stalling out. Just before stalling I opened the hood and observed that the steady flow of fuel through the hoses had a lot of bubbles, then nothing.  My fix was to install an electric fuel pump near the tank to push the fuel forward to the carb.  I removed the mechanical fuel pump and fabricated and installed a block off plate.  I never had that issue again.

We met with the master mechanic and of course the car drove fine with him in it. It always drives great with any mechanic....gr rr.   It only hesitates when we drive it. He said the problem could be anything. He wants us to drive it more to see if the problem gets worse and when it does, then bring it back in.  Not exactly what we wanted to hear.  But he didn't charge us and said people bring him their cars from all over the state to fix, he's a master mechanic and told us he promises that he can fix the problem.  He says he can fix anything.  So I guess we just continue on as is....sigh....

Is your car a manual or an automatic? In 45 years my wife has not mastered the finesse of the clutch and the throttle. It doesn't help that her Civic has drive by wire and at times I even struggle with it. She isn't horrible but far too often the RPM's are too low and the clutch let out is too quickly. She also "short shifts" far to quickly out of first gear and that puts a load on the engine too. I tell her this is hard on the car (pistons, rod bearings, driveline) but she only sees 'going fast' as detrimental. Anyway..., how a manual car gets driven MIGHT be a factor. If your car is an automatic then the above mentioned aspects aren't the same.

Have you ascertained if the hesitation only occurs when the engine is cold (or fully warmed)? These older cars are from an era where the choke often needed to be (re)adjusted for changes in climate. If the car only even gets driven short distances there might not be enough heat generated to warm the car to cause the choke to open properly. If the car warmed up getting it to the mechanic (and runs well for him) then maybe the choke adjustment is the problem. While there can be a multitude of problem here is a list of POSSIBLE causes:

1. Fuel -

The tank, fuel lines or fuel filter may have a partial clog somewhere. When the engine is cold it uses more fuel and the clog can't keep up with the demand. The engine is getting enough fuel to run, but not under acceleration.

A weak fuel pump might also show the same symptoms. Cars starting in the early 70's have a vaper recovery system. If this functions improperly a vacuum is created in the fuel tank and eventually the fuel pump can't overcome the vacuum. If this happens a whoosh of air can be detected when removing the gas cap.

The choke may not be closing (lean when cold) or not opening (rich when hot). The engine needs the proper air/fuel ratio for the temperature it is operating in.

The accelerator pump may not be working (or working good enough). When accelerating the pump shoots an extra squirt of fuel to compensate for the rapidly opening throttle.

The carburetor may be malfunctioning . That is a whole sub category onto itself and best left to those who have great knowledge with THAT SPECIFIC carburetor.

Air Intake  -

There can be an obstruction with a dirty air filter or the hoses that often are routed for a cold or hot air intake. Cars use more than fuel enrichment to compensate for temperature. They will often route intake air over the exhaust manifold to warm it when it is cold and when the car warms it draws air from a cooler area of the engine compartment (even outside of the compartment itself).

Ignition -

I believe the Pinto had a form of electronic ignition after the first few years. These parts are over 40 years old and can show their age. Generally they are replace, not repair parts. Regardless a bad spark might make the engine run, but not run well. Cars of this era were abysmal with convoluted means of decreasing smog. There can often be a plethora of switches, vacuum relays and vacuum hoses used. These parts are likely obsolete in many cases. Many of them were used to control ignition timing and when not functioning properly can cause erratic performance. Frankly they never worked well in the first place.

It can be hard enough owning an old car even when one has lived, ate and breathed cars the bulk of their life like I have. Often times the parts I have mentioned above get removed or modified to revert the car to a simpler function and a removal of many headaches. It is how those with the engine knowledge "get by." Otherwise one is left to the mercy of mechanics many who are unfamiliar with an older car.  Some only out to make a buck, others willing to try but of limited capabilities. Even a competent mechanic might shy away from an older car knowing the may pitfalls that could come. It's a hornets nest of problems and a lack of parts availability vs a newer car that plugs into a computer and tells them what currently available part to order.

These are all things that come with owning an old car. And frankly while the old car may have an alluring form not seen today they drive like an old car, even the best of them. My daily driver is 23 years old and it still outperforms my old cars to the point that I often wonder why I have them. I say none of this as discouragement, but just to be realistic of the time and finances involved and the expectation of results.

With an old car I guess we have to "count the cost" of ownership.
The mechanic also mentioned the AZ heat which is very hard on cars, engines, seals, gaskets, tubes, hoses, etc. etc. We moved to AZ about 3 years ago from MN.
We're going to try to drive it more.
Appreciate your interest and input!

Mr Wittsend provided a lot of valuable cause and effect info.  One of the most relevant is when he said, "Frankly they never worked well in the first place".  So true.  That is why many cars in that era were stripped of their emissions systems that didn't really save the environment and significantly hurt performance.

One suggestion I have and it may or may not do anything and will cost you roughly $10, go to the gas station, pour a can of Sea Foam in the gas tank, top off the tank with gas, then go driving.  I know that may be thought of as a "hack fix", but I will attest that it has cleared up hesitation, stalling, rough idling and other drivability issues with more than one of my vehicles over the years.  It is the only "snake oil" product I have had noticeable  results from.  Others swear by Lucas products which would likely produce similar results.

I wish you luck in finding and fixing the issues.  Take some of Mr Wittsend's advice and maybe you can narrow it to a system or component.  Happy Thanksgiving!

update: was driving a day ago and oil light went on and car stalled and wouldn't start. Checked oil level and it was at ADD.  We added 2 quarts of oil.
We checked all fluid levels today and everything looked within acceptable limits, so took it for a drive. Same thing. Car stalled, and oil light went on.  We checked oil level and it appeared to be ok, but it's hard to ascertain and read on the dipstick sometimes exactly where it's at.  But we added another quart of oil and drove it home and parked it. Okay, so we've been so focused on the hesitation issue for the last 12 months and the oil level wasn't getting monitored, so that's why it was at ADD the first time.  We hope to talk to the mechanic tomorrow. There's been no significant leaks on garage floor (under engine when it's parked) to speak of.

While low oil level isn't a good thing, it's unlikely that it causes your drivability issues.  If it isn't "crop dusting" while driving, I would rule out low compression due to broken rings or piston issues.  The other two things are fuel and ignition, so they would be logical systems to chase.

Oil or “engine” light in the Pinto is related to oil pressure not oil volume. If the engine stops for any reason with the ignition in the run position oil pressure will drop and the light will illuminate. ( So its  normal for the light to come on when the engine stalls). You've  added 3 quarts  of oil and the 2.3L in the Pinto holds 5 quarts with a filter change. Unless you've really “ lost” that much oil it may be overfilled. You most likely have a fuel delivery or ignition issue. You need to find a mechanic who did auto shop in high school on the late 70s or 80s. They are some still out there.

I agree that checking to see if overfilled...t he "ADD" mark on the dipstick is generally onw (1) quart to full.  You said you added two quarts after the first stall and another quart after the 2nd stall.  Without looking, I would say it is overfilled unless you have a major oil consumption issue but there would be a lot of evidence with constant blue smoke (crop dusting), or big oil spots under the car when parked.  I think we all agree:  ignition or fuel, but I will add another potential problem:  vacuum leak.   Tighten the carb mounting nuts, look for obvious ports that are disconnected, then spray starting fluid, WD-40, or similar on vacuum connections with the engine running and note any areas where the engine RPMs race and that may be a source of vacuum leak.

There is no blue smoke of any kind or big oil spots on garage floor.  (Never mentioned before that it's an automatic and not a manual.) We spoke with the master mechanic today, but for various life reasons/medical issues that need to take priority over a car, we won't be getting the car into shop until middle of December. Aargh, but surgery months in the planning takes priority. After surgery recovery and we can give attention to the Pinto, we'll probably have the Pinto towed in at that point since we don't want to risk engine damage. So I'm thinking it will be sitting in garage for a while, with only occasional starting.  I will keep you posted when it gets looked at in shop.  In the meantime, all your input and ideas and suggestions, and reading my posts, mean a lot! You people know your pintos! I mentioned to the mechanic today that the thought has crossed my mind that perhaps the time is coming to consider selling my Pinto, but he jumped on me and said no, don't do it, you will regret it, it gives you joy, and he regrets selling one of his vehicles years ago. When I teared up at the thought of selling it, and with his adamant encouragement to put that thought out of my mind, that sort of confirmed that this is not the right time to think of selling.  He has promised me that he will be able to fix my Pinto. (As a side note, his father was a very wealthy businessman who owned a chain of very luxurious hotels and restaurants, and he wanted his son to follow in his footsteps, but he convinced his father that his love from his youth up was with cars, cars, cars, and that is the direction he took.) It seems reasonable at this point to move forward with this particular master mechanic.  Will keep you posted when something develops.  Thank you all!!! You're the best!

Good luck with the surgery and getting your Pinto drivability issues sorted out.  Don't sell your car unless you sell it to one of the members in this group that will take care of it the way you do.

We're very grateful we have the finances to put into the car, in spite of an old car being a money pit. If and when the day comes to rehome it, it would have to be sold to the right person, not just anybody. We purchased it on ebay in 2005.  Selling a pinto on ebay would get the most views and bids, but we would not sell it there because now ebay requires entering personal bank information in order to be a seller. We used to enjoy selling on ebay, but no more. Internet chatter from ebay sellers talk about the hassles of selling due to this new policy change; lots of complaints about getting their monies, etc. etc.  And with all the scamming going on in today's world, no way are we going to give bank account info to ebay. We have the Pinto insured for $6,000. We get inquiries to sell it but this is not the time. When we joined this site in 2005 there was so much activity on fordpinto.com and it's disheartening to see all the people drop away over the years; so not sure we could even find a viable interested party on this site anymore to potentially sell our pinto to. But like I said...definit ely not selling at this time.

I missed the heyday of the Pinto site.  I bought my Pinto maybe 5-6 years ago and not so I could have or restore a Pinto.  I specifically looked for one that was complete but something that could not drive or be restored.  It took me several years but I finally found the POS that I was looking for.   My intent from the start was to use the power plant and various other parts to build the car I have been documenting in the "My Project" section of the forums.  I had three Pintos between 1983 and 1989.  They served me well which is why I wanted my project to be part Pinto.  While many on this site have been helpful, it would have been nice to be around when it was more active.  I typically drop out during the Winter when I am working 80 hours a week but this Summer I made so much progress on my project I think I will check in more this Winter, even though I probably won't touch the project till Spring.  Keep us posted on the surgery and Pinto.

"I missed the heyday of the Pinto site."

When I joined in 2007 it was a rather active site. The "Go To Guy" Pintony got banned for something inappropriate he said (though I was told he could come back, he declined). Fred was a happy go lucky source of parts, Dick was a tad set in his ways but still helpful. All three have now passed away. There were a number of other people who have passed, a younger man named (I believe) Dave and then Diane as well.

There use to be a fair number of woman here but a few curmudgeons drove them off. One guy and Diane were constantly at it. Dwayne pours himself into the daily aspects of the site (to which we all need to be grateful) but he is not the owner, nor technically able to deal with the IT aspect. And for a period the site languished and seemed neglected, often going down at times I think upward of a month. For one individual it turned more into a mental health forum than Pinto's - then after years of being here they abruptly disappeared. There are other places on the internet to get personal help. I don't think anyone was opposed to helping someone in a moment, but when it became perpetual ... . A LOT of people tired of it.

So, it seems the few of us who regularly check in are the one's that create the activity. It would be sad to see the site end because even if not very active there is a lot of information that resides here. It IS the only Pinto site. Thought a shadow of what it once was it still seems to have a faint pulse and we can be thankful for that.

quick update: surgery was cancelled (long story) so pinto got trailered in to the shop yesterday.
Was told today that a vacuum hose needs to be replaced because it was shredded, and, also told it was overfilled with oil! So they were draining that off.  More trouble shooting will continue on Monday.
