Title: My buddy just bought this car :) 78 Mercury Bobcat
Post by: Gonzobobcat on February 07, 2015, 03:56:20 PM
I'm so excited my buddy just bought this Mercury Bobcat.

But, I have a moral dilemma....... .....  He said I could have it.   And I want it!!!!   The only issue is-- he is interested in keeping it for himself.

What should I do?  Be selfish or share the fun of a PINTO.

One other problem.  He is in Colorado and I'm in Texas.  Not sure if the Bobcat is road worthy to drive it here.

My question would be "Did he buy it for you and now wants to keep
it for himself or did he buy it for himself, but would let you have it?"
I had a deal like that on a 78 Cobra II. He bought for me on my tip,
and then kept it for himself. we're not friends now, and that was 25
years ago.

It sounds like he bought it, but is not somewhat hesitant about owning another car, which may become a project car which he may not be able to afford, financially or with personal time, in the future. If you really wanted it, he would give it to you, taking that concern and uneasy feeling off of his shoulders. He would rather keep it and enjoy it for himself though.

I would let him know that you are interested in it, but only if he looses interest in it. Give him the chance to enjoy it and see what the "Pinto hype" is all about. If he really learns to fall in love with the car, awesome! If not, he's got someone to give it to that he knows will take care of it the way it should be.

I would really have loved to keep my old 73 Station Wagon, I REALLY would have! Financially, I couldn't take care of it anymore, and it needed more love, and to be driven more often than I ever did (to keep seals and hoses from going bad due to lack of use). So, I sold it to Dianne. I received at least a dozen other offers on the car before selling it to Dianne, but no one seemed genuinely interested or excited about it, so those offers were declined, and then I met up with Dianne. Dianne's excitement and joy over just LOOKING at the car told me I found the right person!

I frankly don't think you could have made a better choice in that situation.  Dianne's excitement, interest, and drive made her the perfect candidate!  I can't wait to see that wagon when she's all finished with it!

The perfect candidate I guess for Brownie, my Milo, and soon to be bumble bee :)

I love that car! Dave knows I love it also! I love that car more than my Kind Cobra, which is nearing completion mechanically. But I don't care about the King, or any of my other cars, than the Pinto wagon. It's hard to explain when you have a car worth 3 times more restored than the restored wagon. Hagerty doesn't even price then.

I will just love that car forever, and more now with a 2.3 EFI when it goes in! Thank you for selling it to me Dave!

Thanks Dwayne!

Im in the Denver metro area. I own a 77 bobcat fully restored and a 76 pinto project. To the best of my knowledge I am the only club member in Colorado. If your friend would like a buddy, have him contact me. I would love to meet him.

i say want it, buy it - if they really want to keep it then they wont sell!
and if you buy they might end up buying back!
