Title: Monterey, Ca to Ft Hood Tx
Post by: Gonzobobcat on May 20, 2013, 06:26:02 PM
I just drove my 1977 Bobcat from Monterey Ca, to Ft. Hood Tx.  No problems.  Smooth ride.

I was worried that my little bobcat wouldn't make the trip but ran great.  It was a fun ride to.  Truckers would honk and wave, several people took pics, and my gas station stops were always prolonged by people inquiring about the car or reminiscing about their own Pintos from back in the day.

Great ride!

The only issue.....I don't have air conditioning and Arizona and Texas are hot this time of year.

I love this story! I'm glad both you and your gorgeous Bobcat arrived safely! In 2011 my then-40 year old Pinto sedan was driven from Oceanside, Cali to Denver- then to Pennsylvania.. . down to Virginia, then back to Cali. I was amazed myself!  ;D   These cars are tough! ;D

Yes your car will get hot. I've been driving my 1976 with out having the A/C working for a while.  In the California High Desert (Death Valley Area and FLA). You could try to get a an aftermarket set up or look for some stuff on Ebay.com. Note there are differences between the factory and dealer installed A/C systems. On keeping your car running, have oil, coolant and a spare set of belt's and some tools to fix any small problems. And you should be good to go..

I say next time get a vintage style Auto Swamp Cooler. They work pretty good in the desert. I've been spit on by one many times sitting in the back seat of my parents car on route 66 in the summertime ;)
