T-9 In a pinto?
« on: December 24, 2013, 10:59:25 PM »
I am looking for a 5 speed transmission to use in my pinto. Th t-5s are expensive (to me) it seems and hard to find in the 4 cyl version. The stock pinto 4 speed sucks IMO, I want rid of it, lol.

Wondering if a T-9 would work? I dont know anything about it as far as gear ratios, length, bellhousing type, etc.

Can anyone shed some light on the subject?

My pinto has an 8 plug 2.3 DIS engine, non turbo, so strength isnt a real issue right now.  I do know the T5 is better in that department.

The T-9 will work great behind a 2.3 if you can find one. They are good to about 200 ft lbs of torque. Unfortunately, many of the bell housings have hydraulic clutch activation which will not clear the Pinto cross member. They came behind Merkur 2.3 turbos. The good thing about them is the stock shifter position. No need to cut the Pinto trans tunnel. The T-5 is stronger but you need to cut the tunnel about 1.5 inches forward to make it work unless you go through the trouble of adding a Camaro rear T-5 housing (I did). The speedo gear is a problem but fixable and the trans mount is further back and at a funky angle. Again, workable with some creativity. The T-9 is also very expensive to repair if needed. I spent $600 on the rebuild for my Pinto race car. I have $70 in my 2.3 Mustang T-5 (Pick-Your-Parts junk yard) plus $270 in the Camaro tail housing parts (don't need to cut the trans tunnel) of my 71 2.0L A.K. Miller turbo street Pinto.

Oh darn I thought a T9 would be easier to find since no one wanted them.  I have two pick-n-pull yards here, but neither of them have any cars with a T5.  Nice to know about the camaro tail housing tho. I might want to do that conversion. Would a camaro T5 work with a 2.3 if i had the input shaft changed? That might be the only way to get a T5 locally for me (if the picknpull yards have one of those that is)
