Just wondering what my 80 Pinto mght be worth
« on: November 02, 2020, 01:04:34 PM »
This isn't an ad. If I sell this I'll do it locally. I just want to get an idea what my car might be worth. I inherited an 80 Pinto my dad bought brand new. It has 33,000 miles on it. I put some work into it, mostly because it set for 7 years without being driven. Pumped the gas tank as dry as I could get it to get fresh in it. Even though I don't drive it much I have been keeping it full & regularity replacing the gas.  Replaced everything on the brakes. I found a brand new Morotcraft carburetor still sealed in the box. It didn't  need it, but while I was at it I replaced the timing belt. Put a new muffler on it. It runs great.

The interior is mint. I had the driver's seat rebuilt original & installed a preformed carpet set. My dad never drove it in bad weather so the underside had no rust. I had it steam cleaned & undercoated. There is small surface rust spots on the rockers just behind the doors. The paint is original & tough a bit oxidized still looks good. It has always been garaged.

The only drawback is it is the most basic model. No AC, power steering or brakes. 4 speed on the floor. One reason I m thinking of selling it is I had an accident with a skill saw last year & lost a lot of function in my left hand. it's difficult for me to drive without power steering.
I regularly start it & occasionally take it for a spin. It's just that I'm 70 & retired & do very little diving. I don't have a clue what I should
ask for it.

A conundrum for sure!  On the pro side, you have a very nice survivor with fantastically low mileage which you say runs well.  On the downside, as you've already mentioned, it's a base model without options.  To that end of the list you can also add a lackluster color combination and the simple fact that the square-headlight Pintos (1979-80) are, in most people's eyes, less desirable.  Of course, you never know until you try... you may find someone who just falls in love with it.  My guess is that it's a car which will probably appeal more to someone looking for a dependable but cheap second car than to a collector.  Find someone with a sentimental attachment to a 1980 Pinto in their past and you may do really well.  To a minor extent, the overall used car market in your area will be a factor as well.  I live in Virginia.  If it were my car, I'd price it around $2500 and prepare to be flexible.  Others may disagree and of course, every market is different.  Good luck!

If $2,500 is all I can get, that means it hasn't gone up in value in 20 years. A guy that ran a special interest car lot told me that is what it was worth then. I had always thought that any low mileage car in cherry condition, especially garaged & maintained would always go up in value. You could practically consider it one owner since the only other was my dad. Being registered as an antique means my tags & taxes are only $17 a year. My insurance is only $130.

I wasn't going to comment but, ... .

The pluses are a very clean interior and very low mileage. However, to me, the base model is likely irrelevant. There is a fair likelihood that someone will buy this car to make a race car out of it. They may gut the nice interior, repaint the car and remove the low mileage powertrain. So, to them those aspects are a mote point. Also, low mileage doesn't account for perishable (often rubber) parts like hoses, engine mounts and door/window seals. As you note there is rust near the rockers. To a seller the car is 99.9% rust free. To a buyer the car has rust in a difficult to repair area that is common to a Pinto. I see that small appearing rust as the most major deterrent far more than it being a base version of  lesser desirable model.

I assume by the brick building you are somewhere east of the Mississippi and given a generally decent overall condition you would draw a buyer from that area. As Dwayne noted the later Pinto's are not as well revered as the 71-73 small bumper models. Honestly prices are so hard to estimate these days. Barret/Jackson gets an alcohol induced buyer who drops $25,000 on a Pinto and everyone things their near basket case is worth at least half of that. To me a realistic price is $4,000-$6,000 and that will only come when the right (wanting, Pinto loving) buyer comes along.  Otherwise as just a vehicle of transportation $3,000 is likely the maximum. That is based on California (where I reside) prices that are likely higher than other areas. Not all old cars escalate in value and a Pinto is a bargain basement car regardless of how much we may like ours.

I'm located in Kansas, but as I said, the car has always been garaged & never been driven in bad weather. Would seem a shame just to gut such a clean, well maintained car. If they would just do that, couldn't they just use any beater?
In the past, one of the reasons I wanted to keep it was a backup car in case my driving car was down & I needed to get to work. Being retired, I don't need that. I hardly drive much over 1,000 miles a year.

In the end the value will be what a buyer is willing to pay. Set a price you think is in keeping with your opinion and if it doesn't sell adjust it downward in increments over time. I'd think lowing it $250- $500 every 10 days would find a buyer and get you the best price they are willing to pay.
