I don't know if the 1979 hatch dimentions are the same but you might try a 1971 half hatch. It gives you the look of a trunk model without losing the hatchback access. It would be WAY less hassle than rebuilding the whole rear section.

Good luck finding one, It took me 2 years to find a rusty one...   there is a Fiberglass company that makes a small window hatch out of glass...

One thing for sure. The fiberglass hatch would cut down on labor.
