Pinto / Bobcat at Pick Your Part (50% off sale)
« on: August 02, 2013, 08:32:02 PM »
The Sun Valley, CA. Pick Your Part (50% 0ff this weekend)  has a brown, '73 Squire wagon. 2.0, Auto.  It is generally complete, but well weathered.  There was a Bobcat also, I didn't grab the year, but I did grab the 3.40 third member out of the 8" rear.  ;D I also got the three pod gage cluster that goes where the heater controls typically go.  And, yes, the white plastic is nearly like dust (handle with care)!

The Bobcat was hit in the driver's front.  The color is a hard to describe green.  It also had four Rallye wheels, though the center caps were missing. The stainless wheel rings were so-so.

I'm just letting folks know.  I'm 45 miles away, so I'm not going back.

Thanks Tom for the heads up. The wagon had already been sent to Pinto heaven by the time I got there this morning at 8am. I was however, able to score the Bobcat taillights, arm rests, axles, backing plates, radio bezel, rallye wheels and tires. Plus a few little odds and ends. Thanks again,

When you say, "sent to Pinto heaven" do you mean its condition precluded any parts useable, or that it was gone?  The reason I ask is that it appeared it had recently entered the yard.  It still had the hub caps and air cleaner on (two of the first things commonly are removed). Typically they keep car for about 6 weeks.

Glad you were able to score parts off the Bobcat. Other than the "hit" it seemed decent for its age. Hope you didn't slip in any of the gear oil. Typically they drain the fluids.  But this car still had 90 weight in the rearend.  When I pulled the third member the only thing quickly available was an old, tattered seat.  Unfortunately is wasn't as absorbent as Scott towels.

The pinto was nowhere to be found. I went through the ford section 3 times, row by row and could not find it. There was a well stripped Mustang II in the back row but no Pinto wagon. The guy at checkout said it possibly was moved it to the upscale area (modern cars and classics) but I didn't pay the extra $2 to enter because I don't really need anything from it. I was just wanting to see it. I've been looking for a clean early pass side front fender (71 is ideal) but the woody wagon trim kills that anyway for my street 71 trunk model.

Well, I'm glad you got something off the Bobcat.  I wonder what happened to the Pinto??? It was a few rows towards the back from the Bobcat and a few cars to the left. But if you went through three time you would surely have seen it if it was there.

Yes, The white Mustang II in the back row has been there for a long time.  At least since the July 4th sale and I'm thinking even the sale before that (early June). -  BTW, did you notice the "3.00 Rear" I marked in the dirt on the back window? So, yea, with the eternal white Mustang II being there it was strange that the Pinto got pulled. Like I said from the lack of parts taken and the positioning in the rows I'd say it was only there a few days to a week.

Lastly the Rallye wheels on the Bobcat - were they still there?  A few years ago I got a set off a (ironically) - white Mustang II. It was when 13" steel wheels - WITH tires were $7 each @ 50% off.  They have jacked the prices up so much they are pushing $30 each - even on sale. They now sell the wheel and tire separately even if the tire is mounted.

Update: I just checked the Pick your Part listing of recently added cars (goes back about a month) and neither the Bobcat or the Pinto are listed???  What next, Rod Sterling posting to say we just entered the Twilight's Zone?  Do Do, Do Do, Do Do, .............

Tom,
The rallye wheels and tires were still there. The trim rings were gone. I only wanted the wheels and tires so I can roll my race car around and not use my race tires (they flat spot fast). The rallyes on the front of the Bobcat were a bear to get off. I had to wedge other tires and rims in different combinations until I got it right. Those lugs were on there REALLY tight! One tire I bought would not hold air until I broke the bead, cleaned the tire and rim and re-inflated it. All good now. You are right about the prices being up. I have not been to Pick-Your-Parts for about 3 years. Their 1/2 price is what I used to pay full price! With all the core fees, taxes, and environmental fees, it gets pricey fast. I paid $182 for a mess of stuff but I'm still a happy guy. I didn't notice the dirt 3.00 on the back window of the Mustang but I wasn't looking closely at it either (I never went around to the rear). I'm thinking back and the yard had moved/removed a double row of cars to clear a path to bring in more cars of all types, maybe they moved the Pinto into a non Ford area? The path was about were you saw the Pinto. It would make sense.
