HELP HELP PINTO IGNITION SWITCH FITTING

HI GUYS
I AM RACING MY PINTO ON FRIDAY BUT THE IGNITION SWITCH IS STUCK OR GONE CRAZY THE STARTER MTR TURNS OVER EVEN WHEN THE MTR IS RUNNING IT WILL NOT SHUT OFF TILL I KILL THE BATTERY IF I HOOK THE BATTERY BACK ON IT WINDS OVER STRAIGHT AWAY AND STARTS UP WITHOUT THE KEY TURNED, I HAVE A NEW SWITCH TO FIT THE ELECTRICAL BIT NOT THE KEY BARREL HOW QUICK AND SIMPLE PROCEDURE TO FIT IT IS THE SLIDER SWITCH WITH THE MULTI PLUG ON THE END, I SUSPECTED IT WAS FAULTY AS I ONCE GOT A PUFF OF SMOKE OUT THE STEEERING COLUMN NEED TO DO THIS RAPIDO TOMORROW ALL INFO GRATEFULLY TAKEN,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Hi Cannonball,


You might want to disconnect the solenoid trigger wire at the solenoid.  If it still turns over then it is a bad solenoid, if it stops turning over then it is a bad switch.

Under certain freaky circumstances involving a very low battery about to die the solenoid can snap shut to then weld itself shut and do that too. Solenoid then may be bad but not the ultimate problem, which will be the battery.
