Title: Got Some Pony Caps!
Post by: pintogirl on September 05, 2011, 10:54:55 PM
In all the excitement of my new bus, I forgot to post the reason we went to the wrecking yard in the first place!

We were told there was a Pinto with 3 of the mag wheels. We went and yep, there was a Pinto, a wagon. Really rough. It only had 2 of the mags and we couldn't get them off because some one put the stock lug nuts on and we didn't have a socket skinny enough to get them off. We will go back next Sat. with a home made socket. Bob knows the guy and he is supposed to be keeping the Pinto to the side for the week.

They had these caps on them!!

So now I have 2 red caps and 2 black ones. LOL Once I get the mags I can run them on one of the Pintos. You can only see one side at a time anyway! LOL

Seriously r4pinto you would be amazed at what comes through our junk yards and classifieds. I live in the central valley in Fresno and it's a Pinto hunters dream here.

AAAAAACK!!! I have the center caps, but I need the rims that they'll fit on. Ruby needs to have period-correct mags and center caps.  ;D

I though Ruby had correct mags??

I only had 2 of the mags, so if we are actually able to get these rims, I will have a complete set. I will just have the black pony caps on one side, and the red on the other! LOL

Must be nice. Out here in Ohio you are lucky to find parts for a car from the 1980s, let alone a Pinto. Back when Pick N Pull was U Wrench it you never knew what you would find but after Pick N Pull took over the yard went mostly newer stuff. My Dad is saving up to go to a football game in Arizona so joking around I told him to go shopping for me. He said there is a big chance that can happen depending how long he would be out there.

Kimmy, Ruby's current set are '74-'80 caps and rims. '71-'73 are about the same, but the smaller caps fit on them.

Well, we went back out today with a "turned" socket. (socket that hubby made skinnier on his lathe.) It barely fit between the lug and the wheel, even after making it smaller. Only bad thing was, it broke with the first try. Needless to say, we left with out them.  Our friend that works there said he will try to get them before they scrap the car. So there is still hope. We'll just have to wait and see. At least we got the caps!!

Try a 3/8 drive, deep well, six point socket with a "3/8 to 1/2" inch adapter.

3/8 drive sockets are thinner than 1/2 drive sockets.

The problem we are having is someone put stock lug nuts on the mag wheels. How they managed that we don't know? There is very little space between the lug nut and the rim hole. Hubby tried turning a socket down ( making it smaller with his lathe) but that didn't work. It was to thin, although it fit between the lug and rim, it just broke when we tried to put any kind of pressure on it.

I think I get what you mean... when you say "stock" you mean the short nuts that are standard, as opposed to the long nuts for the optional wheels... I learned the hard way that the short standard nuts aren't gonna cut it. I hope you can get 'em. ;)

That's exactly what I'm talking about.

I hope I can get them too! I just bought 3 more black caps, just like the 2 I got from that scrap Pinto, off ebay! So now I have a full set plus a spare! :D Just need 2 more of the mags! :D
