Im beginning the research for a race motor for my 71 pinto i want to overhaul it by the end of this summer. Anybody know of someone that sells high performance new engines completely built? Im thinking of just going stock motor and doing a bunch of motor work. Ive built motors in the past. What should I do to it for a reliable motor with high horsepower? Hoping for 240 plus horse?

What would you guys suggest for an engine build? What parts for the best performance? Was thinking a t bird turbo motor but dont really want to deal with all of the wiring harness bullshit. Unless its easier than I think it would be.

My shop is doing an EFI 2.3 swap on my 73 Pinto. Pinto_one is helping, and I can get my guys to photograph everything as they go through with it. Welding and all. Doing all the harnesses and computer module also. The thread is under http://www.fordpinto.com/index.php?topic=25645.0 (http://www.fordpinto.com/index.php?topic=25645.0)
On the forums under projects, someone is thinking of doing a turbo. The EFI has the same challenges as the Turbo, same configuration basically also with the same amount of work I think. I read it's easier on the newer models also.

Firstly, you need to clarify your goal and what you're willing to do to reach it. 240hp is a lofty number to wring out of anything with the architecture of a Pinto engine and no turbo involved.
With a turbo, a 2.0 or 2.3 has about the same potential.

It's not. It's probably tougher than you think. Putting an EFI 2.3T in a '71-73 Pinto is a huge undertaking that hits on every form of major work you can do to a car.
-
Putting a 2.3 in a 71 to 73 is not that hard, just have to take your time and not butcher up the whole thing, if you do not want the turbo and not the wiring use the 84 up turbo block and a early 1980 carb turbo, they are still out there and not to bad when set up right, they used the 9.1 Pistons, the 84 up used 8 to 1. There is room for it on the 71 to 73. Only you will have to use a hood scoop , yep the carb is much higher, unless you cut off the carb mounting pad and use a side draft webber to hid things, Back then I used the hood scoop that came off the 80 mustang , looked good,

Well, I'm doing it good or bad or indifferent. My guys at the shop are awesome. We're finishing up a V6 to V8 318 on a Jeep Cherokee from a Grand Cherokee. First ones in Idaho that we know of doing it! So, I think I'll get it with help from Pinto_one. If I don't, I still have my little weak 2.0 that came with the car!
-
I overlooked the part where Pintoman71 is looking for a race engine. IMO, the 2.0 is probably better for that being lighter and happier at high RPM. The problem is that 2.0 parts were drying up 20 years ago in the US. There is still a large aftermarket for the "Pinto" engine in Europe and Burton Power seems to be one of the leaders. Prepare to pay.
Putting a 2.3 in a 71 to 73 is not that hard
Maybe if all you're doing is putting in a carbureted non-turbo 2.3, but add in an '83-89 turbo version with EFI and a T5 and it's not "not that hard" IMO.

Hopefully mine will be smooth :)

Dianne, got everything but the front springs, rained out to find the last one (unless I had some bikini mud wrestling babes in my muddy back yard ) to find it, got the oil pan , with pick up, L& R engine mounts, and the L & R frame rail mounts, and the bottom compressor mount with adjustment idler pulley, along with the top bracket compressor to head, send me a message the shop address so I can box this up and ship, later when it drys out enough I can find the last spring, at least this will keep things flowing until you get the engine in the car and running, later Blaine :D

Thanks. It's gonna be awhile. I got the emissions machine in the county, only a few, so it may get busy. I gotta get the King out of the garage also. I'm having a nightmare with the person who is doing my car and bringing it to where I was going to in the first place.
Thanks, but what springs? These out of a Mustang?
PM coming!

The springs for the front suspension on you wagon , the 2.3 is a few pounds more than the 2.0' you may or may not need them, over the years some cars sagg some when the springs get weak, like if you overload the car or have bad roads, guess when you finish the 2.3 install you will have to look at the car from the side too see if the car sits level, my wagon I have use to haul news papers for years, the rear springs were shot, it sat a few inches lower than the front, empty,

I've got air shocks in the back since it was sagging there. Not much on the air on them, just enough to raise the car an inch or two.
-
My 79 wagon had them when I got the car , it had a tow hitch on the back, which I thought the guy before me install the air shocks to help when pulling a trailer, nope one day one of the bags popped and almost hit the ground , insant low rider,

LOL those cars kill me.
How much can a Pinto tow?
-
they can tow easy 1000 to 1500 lbs , V-6 more , the right hitch 3500, on mine I have a rare class two hitch , also have the controller for electric trailer brakes , trans oil cooler and engine oil cooler , HD three row radiator and 100 amp alternator , or a pinto with a trailer towing package, warmed over V-6 with fuel injection helps too in the hills and passing ,
-
How about with the 2.3? A bright yellow small camper would be awesome!
-
well I know a Toyota Prius will tow this, ;D
-
Your pinto with the 2.3 and a yellow painted 13ft scamp camper would tow nice behind yours , if you can find one of the old advertisement's from the middle 70"s you will see a pinto wagon towing one,
-
The dogs are sooo cute!!!
I do want a smaller trailer :)
-
Anybody know of some good websites for performance parts for the 2.0 engine?
-
As mentioned above, support in the USA is getting scarce. Below are some links to companies that support the Ford SOHC Pinto 2.0 engine both here and across the pond. I have only dealt with www.RacerWalsh .com but their site has been intermittent lately (reported to be reorganizing to mainly deal with 4 cylinders again). A internet search would probably turn up more sites, have fun.

I'll have a good running one, with 2 auto transmissions, if anyone needs one!
