Finally got off my butt
« on: November 12, 2011, 11:02:35 AM »
With Winter coming and the occasional rains passing thru, I figured I had better get off my butt and reseal the leaking windshield. I've had everything for months, but Summer gave me an excuse to put it off. Not a particularly HARD job, just messy between using butyl rubber and mineral spirits.
Had a REALLY good rain about 3am and went out to check the floor when I woke up. It's actually dry! It'll be almost like driving a normal car again...... :)

Don't forget the wiper post seals leaking or the seals around the heater hoses & blower motor. Then theres the rusty cowl or bad vent seal leaks & the hard as a rock door seals to worry about. My hatch seal was another leaker ugggghhh!!

I'm pretty lucky in those respects. The windshield wipers don't leak.... the only issue is (of course) door w/strips. Not because they leak water, but wind noise (whistling). Those and the belts moldings will be next, then last.... new carpet. I've been itching for new carpet, but it didn't make sense with a water leak. I've replaced the rear tailgate (wagon) w/strip so that is dry, and have a line on new w/strips for the pop-out windows too.
About the time I get all new rubber installed, it'll be time to start over. Kinda like painting the Golden Gate Bridge....

I also found a vintage set of Cal Custom pedal pads that I just HAD to get. The rain is coming, the old brake pedal pad was worn, safety first.... you know, pick a reason ;)
Oh, and what vehicle was on the installation instructions on the back? Pinto of course.....

you mentioned that you have a line on new rubber for the pop-out windows would they have them for the pop-out 1/4 windows for the sedan (hatchback)?

thanks

That I can't tell you. I had to compare the dimensions and profile of bulk weatherstrips against the factory w/strips. Post a close-up pic of the weatherstrip and I'll see if there's an equivalent.

Has anyone tried to use a set of wiper post seals from a 1970's Datsun 240Z ? They are still being made and sold.....
