Title: Filter/Sock in gas tank????
Post by: pintovol on January 06, 2012, 07:45:49 PM
The Pinto I have sat for years, I had carb rebuilt and put new fuel pump on and also new filter

I have run a tank of gas out with a can of Sea-foam.

Just tonight the car stalled died like it ran out of gas, but i have almost half tan.

Sat for a min  or two fired up and it ran good/normal for about 2 miles then same thing died sputter like out of gas.

fired up again ran about 2 miles again same thing again about 4 times before I got it home

so does the tank ahve a sock/filter in it? that maybe the seaform broke crap loose

That's possible. There is a fine mesh screen at the end of the pipe going into the tank. The only way to know for sure is to remove the sending unit and take a look. That will entail draining the tank but if you can get a good look at the interior of the tank you will know what your dealing with. Chances are the tank will need to be pulled and cleaned. Most any radiator shop will do that.

That is exactly what it looks like. I changed them in both my 73 and the 78 with the same sock. You can get them from sscenterprises .com. Same part for the Mustang II and the Pinto.

You could...the only problem with that is, if it sucked some of that crap up the pipe and plugged it...your kinda dead in the water. If your going to do that put a filter in the fuel line right at the tank. That way if it plugs you only have the tube going inside the tank to deal with. If your in a position where you have to drive the car now, you could get a sock and install it later but put the filter in the fuel line now.

I am going to put a bran new tank on it..so it wont have any crap in it to plug the tube

A new tank will solve the problem.
