Title: Filtering Forum Messages
Post by: Wittsend on November 27, 2019, 01:16:41 PM
I recently replied to a post that dealt with fuel starvation. I used the word  S  U  C  K to describe the actions of a fuel pump drawing fuel and found that when posted the message read "zoop" which was not the work I used. Has it gotten to the point that common words can not be used because they have a secondary connotation?

BTW, it is obvious that the filter can easily be defeated (as noted above) by simply spacing the letters (and I didn't even have to watch a You Tube video to figure that out)  :) .

Hi!

That generic filtering of "unacceptable" words has been in place here since before I joined a little over twelve years ago.  I agree with you that it's ridiculous but several years ago we looked at changing it and found very little member interest in doing so.  I think most active members just learned to live with it a long time ago.  Because this was originally intended to be a family-friendly site, there are obviously words that should not be allowed... but our list is rather extensive.  It can be edited, but doing so properly will be an arduous task and not one single member volunteered to even suggest words that should be removed from, or added to, the list.  Frankly, you've been here about as long as I have and I'm surprised you hadn't encountered this before now.  As you noted however, it doesn't take a lot of ingenuity to circumvent the system.  Happy Thanksgiving!

Dwayne :)

Yes, I found that surprising too. But, no, I can't recall in 12 years a word being changed as I typed it. I actually thought it was something new that was implemented. I had to look "zoop" up to even know what it means.  I thought it was an old man (well..., older than me anyway) kind of a "hillbilly" word. Something new to always be learned.

Thanks for the explanation.
