Early Pinto (71) disk brake upgrade
« on: December 21, 2018, 05:15:22 PM »
I have an all original 71 sedan with front disk brakes.
Do Mustang ll brackets purchased from E bay bolt on the 71 spindles?
If so can I just get new pads/rotors for a Mustang ll to finish off the conversion or does the master cylinder need to be changed as well?
Will the conversion fit inside the original 13" wheels or will I have to get new wheels with the new brakes?

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Mll parts do not work on the early Pintos.

I have a Wilwood kit I assembled / mounted then took off.
I'd sell it for the right price...... will post part numbers / pictures later today.

Thanks for the reply. Based on the look of your car Id say the brake system would be over kill for mine/stock 2lt.  Can you tell me what actually are the issues? IE do the caliper brackets not mount to the spindle? Do the brackets mount but calipers bind on rims etc etc? Or does just nothing mount because of later changes which is why you went with aftermarket? Maverick stuff mount and if so what years?

Just looking to keep as much stock or FORD as possible as its only a low speed cruiser and rotors such as Mustang II are 1/3 the price of the stock 71 pinto ones.

Thanks Mike

I thought there was a workaround for the early rotor replacement. Yes, no?

I remember back about 2008 my wife had dropped me off at Pick Your Part. When she returned to pick me up I had an armful of parts. I commented to her that I was considering a nice set of the early rotors and even though it meant her sitting in the hot car an extra 20 minutes she said, "Yea, why don't you go back and get them." I paid all of $8 for both as it was a 50% off sale. Retrospectivel y I think she deserves "Wife of the Year!"  Who would have known they would be hard to find and $150+ when you did.

The work around was that someone here had machine shop make them into 2 pieces meaning you could unbolt rotors from hubs.  This set up was around $300 i think

Just to make it totally clear, the MII front suspension is completely different than the early Pintos. Almost the same difference as a straight axle compared to a ifs. Ok, slightly exaggerated/oversimplified, but they are completely different, and nothing swaps without a ton of work at a minimum. This is why the 71 brake parts are so expensive. Pinto only and only a couple of years.

If you really want to keep it all Ford, you would be better off to just bite the bullet and buy the 71 stuff. And even a couple of spares for down the road in case those parts are no longer made at some point. IMHO anyway.

In my opinion, you have no need to change to something else.
But, right here on this site, you can buy new.... http://www.fordpinto.com/index.php?topic=28620.msg178925#msg178925

If the stock parts aren't positively worn beyond use then why spend the money?

the only substitute for cubic inches is BOOST!!!

I used a pair of the GM caliper brackets and 11" Granada rotors on my '72 and it wass anything but straightforwar d. The brackets have to be modified with  a fair level of precision and the calipers will probably hit the UCAs with a lowered front end(which mine is and needs steering limiters). It also forces a five lug conversion and the rotors don't come close to fitting under a 13" wheel.
What I thought about doing and really should have is what Scott had made; a separate hub that accepts an aftermarket rotor ring. Instead I saved the $200 for materials by spending $600 on wheels, tires, and axles.  :o
'72 Runabout - 2.3T, T5, MegaSquirt-II, 8", 5-lugs, big brakes.
'68 Mustang - Built roller 302, Toploader, 9", etc.

I'm curious what the fault of the 71-73 Pinto disc brakes is???  I have a 2000 Mazda Protege as my daily driver, it likely weighs similar to my Pinto, the brake discs are at least as small as my Pinto and it is the BEST stopping car I have EVER owned. Granted it has a booster, but is that the whole difference?

Maybe modern materials? Better calipers?

Booster should just make it easier on the driver to brake, less pressure on the pedal for the same effect, but not to actually stop. From  my understanding anyway.
