converting side markers into turn signals
« on: November 30, 2015, 01:39:17 AM »
On my ranger build on a different site I stumbled onto an answer on something that would also work on a pinto for added safety.

Turning the side marker lights into turn signal lights. we all know that the front is the only way to see the turn markers on these cars, what about the side markers too?

here is a link to the question i asked in ranger .com .... read through and it will show what i was looking for and how it should work on a pinto.

i am going to try this on both vehicles.

cheers

that part is not needed , the way i done it was cut the ground wire to the side marker light and route it to the signal wire in the front grill , when the signal is turn on power goes to the side marker light and all the lights on the brown wire serves as a ground and will flash,  when the lights are on the bulbs on that side serves as a ground and the side marker light will blink on and off the power is sent to both sides of the bulb making the bulb go off , that how i got wired on my pinto , only on the front , if you do the back the side marker light wil go off when you hit the breaks,

that is interesting,  will experiment with it, but won't that short out the ground over time?

you cut the wire to to ground , you do not use the ground at all , the color you cut is black , the wire comes from the marker light , thats the one you wire into the signal wire only , the other wire is brown , you leave that one alone ,

I know early Mavericks were wired that way stock. I wonder why the stopped
doing it that way. It works perfect and is so easy it will scare you.

They will blink with the turn signal when the lights are off.
With the lights on they will blink opposite of the front. When
you have power to either one, it back feeds a ground through
the other one. When you put power to both you lose the ground,
thus making it blink. The same thing happens to your tail lights
when you lose the ground to the socket. Your turn signal will work
until you turn the lights on--then nothing, and vise versa. I don't
Know why it works that way, but I know it does.

With a name like Blink, that should be the final word on this subject.
Its better to be a has-been, than a never was.

Yep it's a good mod , done my first on back in 73 , the streets in New Orleans were very narrow and at night you had to creep out from the small one way side ally's , and the blinking side markers made me more visible because you could not see the headlights or front signal light untel you were almost on top of me ,  it should be a must do when you have a chance , plus side it takes less than thirty minutes,
