How do you store engines to save space??
« on: February 27, 2012, 01:21:58 AM »
OK, here is the question..... My two car garage is shrinking more and more here lately with a t-bucket and a 72 pinto in it. While acquiring the two, I have come up with multiple engines and trans and I need to know how to store them and save space. Harbor freight engine stands are cheap enough but they still take up space. I would just like to line them up against the wall.

I did notice one time while looking through eBay across the big water that they had a floor base one. Just the picture wasn't clear enough for me to kick into fab mode.

I personally would only trust it on a small stand, however I have seen people use a thick sidewall tire, with the pan sitting in the middle. If I were forced to go that route I would put a thick foam under it, just to give the pan something to sit on.

I use the small movers dolly from Harbor Freight  # 93888. There is a complete 289 on one and a short block on another. They have some bad reviews, but they seem to be from people trying to use them on a rough or cracked surface. There are other reviews from people using them for eng. or trans. Stores eng. right against wall + it's great for moving an eng. under a stationary hoist to put it on an eng. stand. Beats putting the hyd. hoist together just to do that. They are SALE now for $11.99.

since you mentiond "fab mode" I saw something similar to this

http://www.ebay.com/itm/MOTOFEET-ENGINE-CRADLE-STAND-FORD-289-302-351-MOTO-FEET-/250990884733?pt=Motors_Automotive_Tools&vxp=mtr&hash=item3a7038f77d

couple years back for the 2.3L with wheels on the bottom feet to move. Bolted to the standard mount holes on the engine. Use your imagination and something could be fabbed up. I wish I would have bought a couple myself

I once made a stand for a MGB motor by making a box exactly the size of the oil pan flange.  All you need is 1 each 2" X 12" board, some appropriately sized screws, a saw, and screwdriver or even better, a drill.  Measure the outside circumference of the oil pan and build a box.  The footprint of the stand will be whatever the size of the oil pan is.   Before you say it sounds tipsy, it was actually pretty sturdy.  You could also make the front and back sides slightly longer for stability if you're worried about it.

The wife has picked me up six of the dollys from Harbor Freight. I'm going to mount the 2x12 idea on them and see how that works.
