Camper
« on: April 09, 2018, 09:12:01 PM »
Our Alaska trip went very well tenting and hoteling. But I thought it would be nice to have a hard-sided camper the next time we go in a few years. I still want to take the Pinto, so the camper needs to be around 1,000 lbs. I found no US MFG that make any thing I was looking for. I came across a 50 year plus family business in Canada, Taylor Coach that makes truly light weight campers custom made, one at at a time. There 10 foot weighs less that 1,000 lbs. Right now there is a two year waiting period to have one made. I however ,came across a used 12 foot weighing 1,200 lbs. I bought it! I will see how well it tows this summer. I need to do a few things on the car before that. Put in a transmission cooler, upgrade the hitch, put in a brake controller and 7 pin electrical connector. The MFG also recommended i put an air deflector on the roof of the car to help with the aerodynamics. I will let every one know how it works out!

Looks really good.
But don't forget to account for the added weight of things like food, clothes, blankets, silverware, etc. Stuff you would normally pack in the camper before heading down the road. Mostly lightweight stuff indvidually, but it adds up fast.

I already told Donna, we are just putting in the same things as we did when we went to Alaska, not much more. The trailer was way more storage than we will fill !

Took my first trip with the camper this weekend. We went to a state park about 100 miles from home. Calm winds I am able to comfortably hold 55 to 60 on two lane , or 4 lane state highways. Most hills I did not drop below 50 in high gear, except a couple of steep ones. Stability was very good those same two lane and 4 lane state highways where the speed limit was 55. on our way home we got on a section of 6 lane interstate. I pulled a lot easier, probably due to the drafting effect, but was a bit unstable with even cars passing. I guess because most were passing me at 80 mph plus ,20 mph or more that I was traveling. the trailer cam with a sway control. I will upgrade to a receiver hitch and use it. I got 11 mpg on the way there and 13 mpg on the way home. On the way home we stopped by a local cruise night. The camper being towed by the Pinto was a big hit!

Update... I took two long distance trips with the Pinto and camper this summer. One in July UP of Michigan through Ontario Canada ,Adirondack Mountains and back. In September to the Catskill Mountains in upstate NY and back. Both trips totaled 4,500 miles. Camper pulled fine with no mechanical  issues!
