Bought a new Cruising Wagon and just picked it up, but ....
« on: August 18, 2016, 09:24:29 PM »
I just drove out to Percy, IL and picked up a 77 Pinto Cruising Wagon, silver with the hockey stick stripes. Little bit of rust damage here and there but by all appearances the car is a gem. The interior needs to be recarpeted and the dash pad needs replaced, but otherwise the inside is pretty sharp. However, the paint and condition of the stripes is exceptionally good, almost to good to believe. The gentleman I bought the car from owned a paint and body shop, and by all appearances painted the car exactly as it should have been, but the tri-color stripes look to have been painted on (there is overspray at the end of each stripe, as I recall the originals were folded under and cut off bluntly. The dimensions between the stripes on the doors look a little out of proportion and there are what look to be two, possibly three different colors of carpet, paint, and seatbelt materials. The luggage rack looks out of what as the runners between the corners look highly polished and new, while the four corners anchor parts seem much more weathered, not to mention that the slats that fit on the roof inside of the actual rack seem to be on either incorrectly or backwards as there is a protruding tab that was never visible on any of my other cars. I wonder if this could have been a flood car from years back or if it was just cleaned up by someone who could do it pretty well. Either way I'm thrilled with the car and will be posting pics as soon as I'm able. It is possible this is a FrankenPinto. The only other thing was that the title had the original owners name on it, but the next two owners names didn't appear anywhere. Ohio still gave me a new title when I said he was who I bought the car from, but the gentleman in Illinois said that is common and is known as an open title. I don't know. Any thoughts or ideas? Needs new door and window seals, interior carpet, dash pad, and probably four new tires. There is a pair or rust holes that I will have fixed, but for $700 or so I can have a beautifully done CW. Any thoughts or ideas? I'll post pictures shortly. Thanks all.  FlyerPinto

Open title bad, illegal in lots if not all states. Don't talk about it.
But as long as you now have a title in your name you should be good to go.

Congrats on the car, sounds like a good one.

I just kind of let it ride at the title branch. The paint and stripes are beautiful though, she does nothing but attract attention everywhere I go. I'll post later and fill y'all in on the first two times I took her out. Wanted to go up to the Pinto Stampede in Northeast Ohio this weekend but I have my dogs and can't make the trip. Soon as I find an event I can get to though I'll be there.

An Ohio BMV let something ride & didn't question something? That's a shocker. It was a major pain getting the title taken care of with my Dodge Omni when my friend that sold me the car had issues with getting it changed to his name. Sounds like a nice find. Look forward to seeing pics of the car.  ;D
