Best places for 1973 Pinto stereo speakers placement
« on: January 20, 2014, 05:33:46 PM »
I hate to put a knife to original door panels. So what to do when you want something better than factory AM radio with one speaker in the center of the dash?

FRONT- I took out the windshield, and cut holes in both right and left of the top of the dash to fit two speaker grills from a 70s Chrysler Newport, after painting them to match. Only will take 3.5" speakers, and have to use bass-blockers so they won't blow out. with low frequencies.

REAR- Cut holes a long time ago in my plastic side panels in the back seat. 6X9 Speakers facing each other really did not project sound well  to the driver. Bought a new pair that had tweeters I could angle toward the front. We will see if that works.

STILL do't get enough bass! Anyone figure out how to mount woofers under the seats? Really don't want to sacrifice rear space in my Runabout for a huge bass enclosure.

Anyone have better ideas on how/where to mount speakers?

How about mixing right and left up front to route to a large speaker in the original AM radio dash speaker location?

The goal is to have a Pinto that looks original as possible.

When I get around to working on my 73 again, I plan on putting speakers in the doors using factory grilles as well as installing two 3.5" speakers under the dash where the single am speaker was. You will have to cut a little of the door panel away but it will look original with the grilles installed.

I've been thinking about this same issue a lot lately, too. In the back row, to the side kind of in the wheel well bulge, I believe you could fit an 8 inch sub. However, the sub enclosure for that space would require lots of geometry and odd angles.
You should look into the "lay-flat" subwoofer type, it might help you out. If you aren't going for the best quality, something like this might interest you:  http://www.amazon.com/Pyle-PLBASS8-8-Inch-Active-Subwoofer/dp/B001RJMZRE/ref=sr_1_4?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1390900562&sr=1-4&keywords=flat+subwoofer

My plan for my '76 runabout is two 6.5" rockford fosgate coaxials in the front door panels, two 6" fosgate components in the wheel wells, and a 15" fosgate 1200w RMS in the back. I know it's ridiculous, but that's part of the fun.
Also it's kinda funny, a previous owner removed my AC so now I have a nice mounting spot for a second alternator if necessary.

That is a fine option, but gives you less control over where to mount it.

I've been experimenting with using the spare tire well as an enclosure for a sub, or other speakers and the sound is bass(ier) and tonal. Just make sure you have AAA, or have new tires...  hahhaaha

Did you calculate the volume? I would guess that that space is wayyy too large for those subs

Yeah Taylor T, underneath the tire well is sectionally subdivided using 1 " R Tech Foam, obviously you can't see that in the picture. Also in the picture it's actually an 8 inch sub and a 6 inch coaxial that you see.
I used 4x10 Pioneers in the rear panel of my 78 hatchback and they good as well...

What a great idea with the 4x10's! wow! I might have to do that, it never occurred to me to mount them there.
