Aluminum Radiators
« on: July 09, 2018, 09:46:57 PM »
I just completed a long distance trip with my 78. V6 Cruising Wagon towing a camper. It was hot, Lower 90's . It did not over heat, but run past nirman range on the gauge a lot, and a few times spit a lot of coolant into the ocer flow when stopping. I dared not run the A/C for fear of overheating. Has anyone tried an aluminum Radiator? They are supposed to cool much better. Looking for feedback.

They used three diffrent radiators on the V-6 , the standard cooling was a two rows of tubes , Mostly used on none A/C cars ,  but the core was also good enough for a stock 289 V-8 ,the next one was a three rows of tubes radiator , those are most common , the later was a Heavy duty radiator with three rows of tubes but with a huge truck type of tank on top , for more capaicty , used on all A/C cars , if you look on my photo gallery you will see it , if you do have the three row radiator just put a small over flow tank like the newer cars but conect the hose to the bottom , fill the radiator to the top and the tank to the middle and mark it , that should be your cold fill , when the engine heats up it will a be higher due to the exspantion of the coolent in the engine , that will take care of every thing , that radiator is good enough for a built 351 ,  let me know what you have , if its a two row I have a three row if you want it , my camper weighs 2500 lbs loaded and no overheating problem , even with the air on ,

Blaine, I had a two row, it was originally a Non A/C car. I put in a factory unit out of a 77 complete with 3 core radiator. It is over 40 years old, so it my be getting plugged. I am using the original 4 blade fixed fan. It does have a recovery tank with no filler cap. What shape is the radiator you have ?

It’s a reg three row , had it cleaned and Roded out , put a few hundred miles on the Cruze wagon before I pulled the engine to rebuild to put in my 75 when it ran hot and busted the heads , so still like new , the one in my 75 is a new one that I found NOS , found that the older radiators will last longer than sixty or more year when kept clean and have a good radiator shop that knows how to work on them , this one has over 100 K on it but pulled it out and had it redone when I cleaned the whole cooling system , rodding it out is the take the top off and run a flat bar the size of the tube to remove the rust and scale after they hot tank it , then repeat again after , they put the top back on and check for any leaks , I will see if I got the old flex fan too , the four blade may not be enough ,

Blaine, yeah that would be great. Would you also have the smaller fan pulley ? Are you going to this year's Stampede? It's starting in Nashville in 2 weeks, I'll be there.

Not going to make it this year because right at this moment my pinto project Garage is being built , so I have things all stacked out of place , next year i can make it , and the year after i know i can because i will be retired , the fan pulley I would leave stock , too small is hard on that one belt , along with the bigger fan , I found it this weekend , but have to move a pile of things to get to it , will mail it to you when I start moving into my new garage , and the electric gauge does not tell you much where you at when your under a load , I have a small gauge in mine and runs 198 most of the time , I have a 195 thermostate in mine for gas mileage , sill have the idiot light also , it blinks once in a while when I am towing up a long long hill , temps around 210 , and drops quickly , may just try the 180 degree thermostate when I change the coolent , do it every three years to keep up the cooling system , will also convert to the three belt water pump pulley set up then of the 2.8 bronco II , in case that one belt sanps and toast the engine ,

I got the fan dug up and still can not reach the radiator (got to lose some weight ) hopfully this weekend my new pinto Garage will be done and can move enough stuff out to get to it , next month I will be installing a lift so help with storage , by the end of the year i will have two of them , storing 4 cars in the spot of two will be great , the front part will have a boxed end part with doors so I can have A/C and heat when working on my pintos  ;D
