Air Shocks ???
« on: September 19, 2011, 08:48:50 PM »
I want to add some air shocks on my 77 Bobcat.. I just got on a set on 10 hole mustang late model rims.. The car sags in the back a lot. It already has helper springs on it.. TOday i went to  NAPA  and they said they couldnot find air shocks for the pinto.. Does anybody know what type airshock  might cross over to fit .. Let me know.. Thanks David

Personally I'd put the $90 towards new main leaves & lose the helpers as well.

I'm with Pinto5.0 on this.
I put air shocks on one back in the 70s. Very rough ride with very little air in them.
If you are stuck on getting them, measure the stroke. If I remember right, the ones I had were for a Mustang ?

Keep in mind too that the shock mounts were designed by Ford to hold a suspension damper in place that may distribute 100 pounds of pressure briefly when hitting a large bump.

To ask those to now support 1200 pounds of car year after year & take several thousand pounds of pressure every time you hit a chuckhole is asking for trouble.

Air shocks are good for fine tuning launches at the drag strip or leveling the rear on a long trip with 3 extra people & 400 pounds of luggage but they are not meant to hold the car up in lieu of sound leaf springs. Even a good set of leafs from the junkyard are a step up.

I have a set of OLD air shocks that i dont need. They are of all things AC delcos i think. However those are good points about getting new springs. OR even possible blowing the old ones apart and adding an extra leaf from another set of worn out leafs.
That said air shocks can be nice for that once in a while loaded down condition.
 Let me know.
