Answering my own question. I got the information from John Rotella at love-fords.org 175,159 bobcat runabouts made 75-80. The biggest year was 79 when 35,500 were made. Another bit of info I did not know, there is no trunk model mercury bobcat. I never realized the I had not seen one.

Sounds right, the figure I seem to remember is 3.1 million.  There are surprisingly few left when you realize what 3 million cars on the road is like.  They've sold just over 1 million Priuses in the same amount of time I believe and you see them EVERYWHERE.

Can't absolutely vouch for the first couple of years, but I sold Lincoln-Mercury products from 1977 - 1980 and during those model years, the Bobcat was offered only in the runabout and wagon bodystyles; no sedans.

I made the original post two years ago. Now I know a little bit more. I think the car you photographed is Canadian made in 74. Take a look at the grill. If I am right it looks like a 76 pinto.

I'm thinking Canadian early Bobcat as well.
