Title: 8" subwoofer?
Post by: dholvrsn on February 08, 2017, 10:07:52 AM
I'm going to be installing stereo and speakers in the yellow Pinto over the next few days. I'm looking at the rear shelf over the trunk and that oddly shaped half-square and half-round hole in the middle. I'm scratching my head whether to make some plywood adapters or saw that thing out bigger and rounder or both or something else.

What's that center hole supposed to be for? My best guess is for a heated air rear defroster that may or may not have actually been listed as a factory option when all was said and done. My second best guess was to to mount a rear speaker with some oddball Ford proprietary adapter. Well, you're coming out of the '60s into the '70s with your AM Gold and you have your front center speaker with optional fader and rear center speaker, although also not necessarily offered as a factory option.

It's also kind of weird that trunk model Pintos have the two holes for 6x9 speakers in the rear shelf, but only offered front door speakers as an option. I guess dealers and aftermarket could fill in the gap.

Low frequency sound is omni-directional.  I doubt slicing and dicing the the package shelf will increase any aspect of the sub woofer. Plus you run the risk of damaging the back glass with an errant cutting tool. And if it fits better over one of the 6X9 holes (assuming you're not using them) put it there. Preferable on the passenger side for the most minor of differences, but it really doesn't matter.  Again the frequencies are omni-directional.  You shouldn't detect the offset.

I have a sub woofer in my video edit bay set to the left side (dual monitors are dead center) and the presence of sound is equal to both ears.  Your sub-woofer likely isn't a true sub, but those that are are more felt than heard being subsonic.

I installed 6x9s in my rear shelf and they are better IMHO.  I used the best available, yep used but when new $250 Boston acoustics.  The surface area on on them is greater than a 8".  Do what you think is best or what you have laying around.  I had amps from 90s laying around.  If you use package tray you'll need to enlarge holes some, proper tools is key to prevent damage to window.  Rotary file on air grinder for me.

Well, it can be done.

Seat removed, saber saw held upside down under the shelf (it was near deafening and a little white knuckle!), and a couple of homemade 1/2" plywood fillers/adapters.

But if I had to do it again, I wouldn't have cut up the shelf. I would have made a couple of adapters out of 1/4" plywood to go underneath to fit that speaker up with  that D-shaped hole. It can be gamed to lose only 2.7 square inch of opening.

BTW, can 6x9 speakers be mounted in the front doors without too much interference with the window crank?

Like Norm Abram's says, will there be, "A measured drawing available"?  ;D

Just don't pump too many watts through it and blow out the rear window!

Well, that Pinto is not going to be lacking any sound.
