Just to be different...

 Why not put a centrifical supercharger on a 2.0 or a 2.3 in the Pinto...

 How about the Mercruser 4 cylinder with a 460 head in a Pinto...

 Zetec engines are getting kinda plentiful in the junkyards, that would be an interesting swap...

Just a few ideas to keep ya going...
