I have a 2.8 long block sitting on my driveway. It smoked when taken out. NOT clean.  I live in western Oregon. Shipping might be a concern.

Also, contact Mustang II sites for the same engine.

2013 I rebuilt my 2.8 for my Pinto. Several parts were very hard to find and expensive (main bearings ((being unique to that application)), water pump.) I suggest you at least upgrade to the Ranger 2.8. Built from about 1982 to 1985.  There were several improvements to that engine.  Many more parts still being produced for that engine. But, I recommend the 2.9, as, there were more improvements made. It was built from 1986 through 1992.  Lots more parts available. Bellhousing patterans are the same. The only drawback is that the 2.9 is ONLY fuel injected in the US. There is an intake available in Europe that is carbed. I don't know the availability or cost plus shipping.

The manifold in the US is a two piece manifold w/top half belonging to the Merkur Scorpio 2.9 V6 being much shorter than the Ranger top half . Availability is becoming short!
Don't know if any of our members have some experience trying to find the intake manifolds here in the US that will fit under the hood of the Pinto, other than: cm wolf, and pinto_one and myself.
Good luck on your project. Hope to here more progress. Continue to ask questions, as hopefully we can help.

I have a spare from the restoration of my Pinto. It was running when taken out of a Mustang II. Not too far, Owatonna Minnesota.

How tired is your engine , since you had it got it when its new might as well put a newer 2.8 in it out of a ranger or Bronco II , it has a better oiling system and larger cam bearings , the heads are much better also , it's a bolt in , the pluss side would to find a ranger or Bronco in the yards to remove the front timeing cover and all the pulleys along with the clutch fan , you will have three belts driving the water pump and not just one , also the fan makes less noise on the highway and frees up a few ponys , I know you got that trip coming up soon so the would be the fastest way to buy a O/H one for the ranger (and it's got a warranty) also like Enzo said the 2.9 would be better but more work and takes away from being original, and I just got a 2.9 Scorpio top just in case mine ever dies , let use all know how it works out , later Blaine

I am in Ohio picking up one I bought on eBay. Blaine, I am pretty sure mine just needs to be freshened up, but we are leaving for Alaska with it in 3 weeks, and don't have the time. I want to be sure it it be ok on our long trip. The guy I am buying it from has specialized in Carpi's for over 30 years. So he should know his stuff, I hope!

Great, this one has the newer thrust bearings and larger camshaft journals, better head and thicker lower block , did it come with the timing cover ?? , and last make sure the pilot bearing is NOT in the cranks. If it is you will not be able to bolt up the torque converter , the 2.8 with standard transmissions had them , , 😁

No it did not have the timing cover. I will have to use the original one. All the bone yards that have older stuff is gone, and I NEED to get the car running in a few days. Leaving in a couple of weeks and dont have the time to search for more parts.

Well here's a idea , on your way back check out the yards over there , most have more four wheel drive Bronco IIs up that way , rangers also , take enough tools to remove the lower pulleys , timing cover and pump and pulleys and fan with clutch , install at a later date , a good up grade when you can , later Blaine

Hour north of Edmonton.
Four hours south of Ft. Mac.

You should be OK. But have warm clothes handy. From here north you can get snow any month of the year.
If you do get snow, it melts in a day or so : do not panic ! LOL !

Way west of me.
Although, for 7.5 years I lived in Jasper Park. I was the HWYS road / camp foreman, 60 miles south of Jasper town site. About 6 miles north of the Athabasca Glacier.
Camp is closed now.
