Title: 1972 Pinto Diff
Post by: Reeves1 on July 24, 2020, 05:38:56 AM
About 12 to 14 years ago I bought an old gas welder. I finally needed it on an old on going steel fencing project.
So I pulled it out of the shop, cleaned it up good. Full tune up & it runs good & worked.....but it is very heavy & leaving it on my big trailer was not working out.... So I decided to build a new trailer for it.

Picked up .120 wall tubing. 1.5" x 3". Welded it up with my Mig.

OEM wheels & hub caps ! New 13" trailer tires.

I still have to weld in the cross supports where the welder will sit. Plus storage area(s) and brackets to hold cables & torches. Then blast / paint.

Pics not great - taken with my old flip phone !

Fencing project is made out of 4" (but measures 4.5") gas line pipe. New stuff that was left over the end of jobs.
3" cross pipe. I have 4 welded in so far & have 6 more to do. I took the outside plastic coating off, as it degrades over time & falls off. Tar coating under it.
Posts are 5' 6" into the ground & 9' 6" above.

Old 11' disk behind the posts is about 100+ years old. Display only. It is sitting on old bridge boards.

I read the text before I looked at the pictures. When I read "Old Gas Welder" I assumed you were talking about Oxy/Acetylene. LOL It is only after I saw the picture I realized it was a gas powered electric welder. The trailer looks great. I'm the type who really appreciates things built out of 'spare stuff.'

My old Pinto rear end saw far less usefulness. But it did served a purpose.  I welded it to the control arms of My Turbo Coupe which allowed it to roll onto a transport and off the carcass went. Later I sold the 8.8 out of the Turbo Coupe and profited from that.

Been trying to find axle seals for the diff ....and some kind of info on how to pull it apart to change them.
Had lots of 9" diffs apart.

I have a seal number for Yukon # 13985 - but searching their site it doesn't show up (found on Rock Auto)

Ford # D12W-1177C - is this right ?

Off topic, but your post made me think of something. Was a positive-traction differential ever an option for the Pinto?

Took me a long time to get it all done.
I still do not have Oxygen & Acetylene tanks. Local place wants too much for them , so watching for a set on sale places. Mounts / holders made though. I have all the torch stuff , including over 100' of hose (inside back tool box).

Mocked up company for fun ! Cracks my buddies up  ;D

Years ago I built a (heavy !) hoist for my truck.
I didn't bother putting the support under the end for the pictures.

(something you may not know ? If you left click the picture one time it pops up bigger)

Right down to the Pinto hub caps! Ahhh..., is the gas tank in the trunk? Does it have Pinto tail lights?

Yea, my son bought a Victor torch for $15 and when he was done it was MANY HUNDREDS to have it gone through, buy new hoses, tanks and a dolly.  He keeps telling me what a deal it was.
