16v 2.3 duratec motor in a pinto?
« on: February 11, 2012, 01:06:54 PM »
Can any one point me in the right direction on what it would take to get the 16v duratec motor into the pinto? I was searching to see if any one has bolted it up to a c4. 2001+ B2300 mazda's got this motor so you could take their tranny. Im not looking for a v8 pinto, more something with better power then stock and great fuel economy.

duratec 2300 = Output is 143 hp (107 kW) at 5250 rpm with 154 lb·ft (209 N·m) of torque at 3750 rpm.

2.3 Duratec is a Ford/Mazda engine, jointly developed. Same engine is found in the Ranger, Escape/Tribute and Focus/Mazda 3.

The trans behind it in the Ranger/B-series is the 4R55E or 5R55E, either 4 or 5 speed auto trans. These trans's are an evolution of the A4LD, which was and evolution of the C3. The A4LD and 4R55/5R55 are longer than a C3, so that would need to be accounted for.

I highly doubt it would directly mate to a C4, but I'm sure an adapter could correct that.

I've considered this swap for a '73 wagon I'm aquiring. Even considering boosting it. I would be using the Ranger trans, as that is one the major keys to the fuel economy.

That's a outstanding engine, in my Ranger I never got less them 28mpg and was in the 30's most of the time, your going to run into oil pan issue's  that you'll have to figure out, and the ecu and wiring is going to be fun....  My buddy has a Mazda Speed 3 with the direct injected 2.3, his car is a daily driver and makes over 400whp.. with a completely stock engine, just bolt ons,  the thing went 11.6's at 120 last time out.... if I could figure out the wiring, I'd try the swap,

Ive looked into this swap they make a c4 bellhousing I cant remember where I seen it to fit a c4 to them and you need a focus oil pan for sure the ranger one will not work in a pinto. Also the focus pan looks like its not going to be a direct fit but the closest you will find. The you got wiring/ fuel and all the fun stuff. I only looked into it so I could turbo it and have the light weight aluminum block/head it been done in Xr4ti and svo mustangs and such a few times but never seen one in a pinto/bobcat yet.

Hey there, dont mean to discourage you but what you want to do is expensive. Unless you happen to have all the fabrication abilites and place to do it. The adapters are availible for the zetec and the duratec to go to the T5.

I saw some other links that say they also make the C4 bell and use a Mustang II convertor(9 3/8 bolt pattern) but i cant see it in the parts for duratec or zetec. You might have to call them.

They also have setups to allow you to get rid of all the electrics. However youll never be able to justify it for gas mileage savings.

It would make a killer reliable engine,(with the full computer and electrics though) and definatly high tech. If you wanted turbo it DAAAM youd have a killer ride.

All it takes is MONEY!

It was not in all Rangers, in fact it was not used until 2000+. The mighty 2.3 Pinto motor was the mainstay of the Ranger...So do some homework. You can use the 2.3 etc as long as it's a Rear wheel drive but to use a FWD good luck..I see lots of money....
