Major score at the junk yard! (for me anyways)
« on: May 26, 2014, 01:53:19 PM »
Well,

today Pick N Pull was having their 50% off sale so I decided to go there to get a couple parts for the Grand Prix, as well as get two wheels for the 77 parts car so I can get the good tires off the 77 & on the 80. Why two do you ask? Because the 80 has two 14" rims from a Tempo on the back, which will be going on the 80.

Anyways, I came across a 1986 Ford Tempo and decided to take a look at it since I noticed the car had blue interior. The seat belts on my 80 are pretty well shot so I figured what the heck. I can't afford new belts so why not get some from another Ford car & see if they work?? Well, what was gonna be just front belts, also ended up being the rear buckles. Since the rear seat belts on the 80 weren't in the sun they are still flexible & not faded but the rear buckles were rusted up something fierce. No matter what I would do the Tempo would not give up those buckles.
No harm, I recalled seeing a 1993 Mustang convertible also with blue interior so I looked. Score! The rear buckles were there & in great shape! I went ahead & grabbed them, and while I was at it noticed the front buckles were in great shape too. on the Pinto the plastic boots were all cracked & shot so the belts would fall between the seat, and the same thing on the 86 Tempo but on the 93 Mustang they were perfect. Another score! Grabbed them, and they are now going to be in my Pinto.

I'm not completely sure if the front shoulder belts will work from the Tempo but I figure at 6 bux each I got nothing to lose, and if they do fit they have gotta be much safer than the old wore out Pinto seat belts. Pics to come soon of the parts, as well as the old wore out parts they will be replacing.

On another note it was sort of bitter sweet to get parts from an 86 Tempo. The body was near perfect, and only issue I could see was a rotted out driver side floor. Bitter sweet for me because my first car was a Jalapeno Red 1986 Ford Tempo LX coupe. There are days I wish I still had that car, primarily because it was my first. And this Tempo was optioned out big time, even having power windows which was not common for those back then.

I love the yards and often like Christmas. I always take the entire batch of tools in trunk so can go back out and get some, too many times have I been there and thinking "I should have brought tools".

I too look at all the cars there in fine shape still, you just know they are there because some one not smart enough to fix what was a more than likely simple problem. A tremendous waste.

Flipside? One man's loss is ano........... .............. ........

You'd go to a junkyard without bringing tools? That's like going to look at a car without bringing a trailer. ;)

I bring my own dolley to the JY too.

Partly due also to our disposable consumer culture.

Yeah, sometimes I'd just do a quick run in to unplug this or that but I always realized it was a mistake not bringing the tools. Always something else to catch your eye........... .......
