Wiring harness assistance
« on: August 16, 2016, 08:06:06 AM »
Hey guys,

A quick summary for those that don't know what happened. Bought my 1980 Runabout in June 2012. Had a ruptured accelerator pump leak gas. Fixed it & when I tried to start it a fire started due to gas leaking all over the distributor and ignition coil lead popping off. Still don't know how it popped off. On top of gas the engine was also covered in oil which fueled the fire. Got it put out and saw the vacuum lines and wiring to be burnt to a crisp. Pulled the head & found more engine issues to call for a rebuild.

I'm now doing an engine swap using the engine from my 77 parts car, and need to fix the wiring. Alpine615 donated a harness to the car & while it was for a 1980 auto non-a/c car I am having some issues with a few plugs on the driver side. I was able to swap most of the existing harness with parts of the other but there are a couple spots that I can't get to match up. I also have a perfectly good 1977 Pinto to compare to but there seem to be wiring differences in the two. I even looked at a scrap harness from an old 1978 I had & can't get it to match up either.

I can't match wire colors because the wiring was burned in the fire. In this case the wiring diagram I have does not help since the wiring is missing, aside from a few burned, melted connectors.

What I need, and it would be a big help, are some images of the wiring harness along the driver side of the car, going to the distributor, alternator, choke, and any sensors on the driver side of the engine compartment for a 1980 Pinto

If I have the images my thinking is I can piece this thing back together. The engine swap will be the easy part in the repair and I've already rebuilt the entire fuel system. The missing piece is the vacuum system which just involves replacing bad vacuum lines, and the bad wiring. I appreciate any and all assistance.

Nobody has pics or able to take pics of a 1980 Pinto wiring harness? Looks like I will be playing a major guessing game. Got another 1980 wiring diagram book ordered but was hoping to get it fixed before that comes in. Oh well

A few days back when this post appeared I looked at Google Images to see if there was an image like you need. Seemed to be a lot of 'stuff in the way' to definitively see. So, I didn't say anything. But, you know better than I what you need so you might want to take a look yourself.  Otherwise, sorry, but I have a '73 with an '88 2.3 Turbo swap and there is nothing there to help you.

Yeah it's hard to tell when a fire took out wiring. What didn't burn was pulled out in 2012. I'm gonna try to piece it together and hope it runs. Hard to when the harnesses have changed towards the end but it is what it is.

Hey Matt.

I wish I could help, but have never had an 80. If I was close I am sure I could help you figure it out from the wiring diagrams, but I am one of those that needs to be there to see what is happening.

It shouldn't be too hard if you have both the 79 and 80 wiring diagrams. find out and eliminate (meaning don't worry about) what is the same, and then fix the rest.  But then I enjoy wiring. I know for some it is closer to a nightmare.

Yeah, you would think that someone here could take some pictures for you though.

Seems site traffic has dropped. Oh well as long as I can get the car running with the 77 harness rigged until the 80 book comes in.
