1972 Armrest Repair

I need some suggestions on how to repair the driver's side armrest on my 1972 wagon. The tapered end has pulled out of the silver fitting that attaches it to the door panel. Would some type of contact cement work? I do not want to use a product that might degrade the vinyl. Thanks for any suggestions. Arlette
