Window channel installation
« on: January 02, 2013, 10:55:21 AM »
Hey all,

I was pulling the old window channel out of the window frame in the Cruising Wagon yesterday and encountered something I wasn't certain about. This is the felt and rubber piece that fits inside the window frame that the window rolls up into. I bought new ones from a company in Florida (Convertible Tops I believe) and the issue isn't with the new parts, it's more of a question about the old. I was pulling the old one out of the driver's door; it was very brittle and retained none of the flexibility from when it was new, so it is kind of a pain to get out. However, as I was looking at the underside of the window channel I saw what appears to be a rivet in the channel. It is located by the curvature of the window frame and very near the window guide clips. I'm not sure why it would have been necessary, since regular adhesive should be more than enough to hold this material in place. I should have checked the other door or even the Bobcat to see if it had the same rivet; if it does then I can assume it is a factory thing. But I didn't think to do that just then, and before I go back at it I wanted to see if anyone had encountered this before, and if it is in fact a factory rivet or just something some jamoke did to the car. I'll check the other doors tonight and post what I find, but I'd love to hear from folks on this one. Thanks,

Matthew

Sure thing, I'll post it this evening when I get home. If I can dig out the invoice aspect I'll get the part number and all that good stuff.

The company was Convertible Top Specialists on Ebay. The item was described as door glass window channel and they list several vehicles compatible with this item, including all Pintos from 1974 to 1980 and Mercury Bobcats from 1975 to 1980. There is an illustration of the item, and it lists for $29 for an eight foot roll. Part of the description reads "The window channel is the material that goes in the frame around the door windows, the channel holds the window in place so it doesn't rattle around. We also have Pinto door seals, window sweeps, cowl seals & wagon hatch seals in stock." Their phone number is 800-272-2394. I didn't have any problem with these folks at all, in fact they worked with me to fix my screwup when I inadvertently used an inactive account to pay for the items. The two lengths I received came via US Mail and were packaged nicely. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them.

I got the channel, door seals & squeegees from them though I didn't install them yet. They appear to be a great match to the dry originals.

I think that rivet secures the anti-rattle clip to the rubber window channel if I'm not mistaken.

The rivet holding the clip in would make sense. Not quite sure if I'll need to rivet through the new channel as they did, or if I can do the rivet first and then set the channel on top of it. I haven't gotten back out to do any work, it's colder than old Billy out there...I did post the phone number for the convertible folks also, in case the ebay thing ends up not being what anyone needed. I bought my door seals and station wagon hatch seal from Steele Rubber. They are perfect. I haven't done the hatch for the Bobcat yet, and to be honest I don't know if Steele has that part or not, but they will be my first option.

I replaced mine last year with channel I bought from Auto Krafters. It fit perfectly in my 78 , even though their listing was for earlier years. The Auto Krafter ones are of a heavier material that the ebay ones. I dont recall any rivets holding it in other that the rivet holding the clip to the seal. When I installed the clip I did not rivet it, just slipped it over the seal and pressed it into the channel.I used no adhiesive at all and so far it has not moved.

There is a difference in the thickness of door glass between the years but it shouldn't affect anything. I'm pretty sure '71 to '76 are thicker than '77 & up. I think I read that someplace 7 or 8 years ago so if anyone can correct me on the exact years, feel free.

The rivets holding the little metal window guides were a factory thing - less time for installation.
When I replaced my channels with the tops-down channels, I just used some adhesive there and they have held up fine.
