Title: Why are rear brake line connections different size on my 78?
Post by: SeanP on September 17, 2012, 12:06:49 PM
I'm doing a total brake overhaul on my 78 Pinto Pony including pads, shoes, hoses, MC, rear cyl's and hardware and resealed calipers. While replacing the rear hose, I found out that the driver side brake line connection is a size bigger than the pass. side. The old hose was made for this but my new one has the same size for right and left on the manifold. What's up with that? I guess I'll be replacing that driver side brake line.

There are two kinds of rear brake hoses the one that you have and another one.I just got done having the same issue. Take the hose back and order the other one. You have no need to replace the hard line unless the fittings are messed up.

The Autozone part number is 77012 or BH1254 or look for a hose that has a  junction block that has a 3/8-24 and 7/16-24 fitting. The reason is that some time during the year only one type of brake hose was stocked at the factory. The parts counter guy should of asked what year and month the rear was made, that info is on the rear end tag.Not on the tag on the body. This is the same problem that I had and this is the correct part number that is used from 1976 and up.

Seriously?  All the fittings on the rear brake lines are the same size except for that one? I bought my hose from Rock Auto and there was no mention of that weird snafu. Besides, I bought it on a wholesaler closeout so it was cheap yet Raybestos brand.  I think I'll get my buddy at work to cut the old flare off and reflare it with a new 3/8 fitting.  Thanks for the info.

Yes if you look at the parts for both the 2.3 and the 2.8 you will notice that it asks when the rear end was made, this at least asked on the 76 and above cars. By the way you can get an adapter fitting and not worry about trying to cut and flare a new fitting.Look for a 7/16-24 to 3/8-24 step down Dorman etc brand.
