which cap for this valve cover?
« on: April 28, 2014, 09:46:41 PM »
I just ebayed this valve cover

I've got wrinkle paint waiting and ordered a rubber gasket.  I want to make sure I have the right oil cap waiting when it gets here.
Anybody know which one I need?

any oil cap from 85 to 93 ford mustang 2.3 .ford ranger from about 86 to 2001 2.3 and other fords of the same time period.if you are not sure take your valve cover to your local pick and pull yard and test one. as for the back hole you will need the oil seperator  from a turbo coupe or svo mustang.or 79 thru 86 ford with a 2.3. hope this helps.

That valve cover is from an '87-88 Thunderbird Turbo Coupe, FYI.

Is that separator at the rear supposed to be connected to vacuum or vented to atmosphere?

If it goes to the filter it's atmosphere. My 76 doesn't have a rear vent but the oil cap vents to the air cleaner I think.

Different years I guess, mine has the oil cap in the rear and goes to the air cleaner and no breather in front, it does have a PCV that goes to the block. That one has a small hole that could be the PCV???

The rear port on the TC valve cover is indeed for the PCV. It was originally routed to the compressor inlet elbow on the turbo, but the the air filter housing or a catch can on NA engines should be fine. The 2.3T engines had a big can-shaped oil separator/PCV valve, though. Not sure if that's needed or if there are baffles under the PCV port to keep oil spray down. It's been a long time since I've been under the valve cover of a 2.3T.

Mine has a small can coming off the block just above the oil pan then a curved hose, the the PCV valve and a hose going to the EGR adapter..

Then it ought to be safe to plug the one in the valve cover.

No because when vacuum drops the PCV valve closes then air is drawn from the top, it's an enclosed system.

You're right, my 76 cap is at the rear. I was thinking of the 87 engine I have with the cap at the front. I think it's got a vent at the rear though so I'm gonna have to see how Ford routed it. I'm planning to run the 87 engine in my 76 with the same aluminum valve cover as this post is about so I've been trying to figure this out myself before I drop it in the car.

I've got several early aluminum turbo valve covers & that back hole was run wide open. I've seen guys do all kinds of things to put a hose on it but when it was stock it sucked in crap from the engine compartment

Once I get everything together & running I'll be selling off any extra parts. The only problem I have right now is not knowing what all I need.

I figure I'd just emulate what's there now. Keep the PCV on the side of the block, and run a breather off the back of the valve cover, either to the air cleaner, depending on which air cleaner I use, or a separate filter.

what kind of breather do you use? do you have a link or a part number? I don't know what size the hole in the grommet is.

This part number should be available anywhere. Hit the parts store & measure it.
