Title: Which automatic will bolt up to a 1.6l
Post by: rustybarnard440 on July 04, 2014, 09:00:21 PM
I wanna swap out the 4 speed standard behind my 1.6L  for an automatic.  Will either the C3 or C4 bolt up?  Is the bellhousing pattern the same from a 1.6L to a 2.0L, 2.3L?

Might think well about it, the 1.6 thinking never came with ATX, it saps too much power, why only bigger engines get them. You got nothing to be able to give away there. Go for C3 there, a lot less mass to have to spin at all times and why Ford went to them. C4 is more durable but uses up more power doing it.

Betting though they will not fit. I personally do not know.

Unless you have a disability that forces you to use an automatic I would not make the change for all the reasons AMC 49 stated. If you do have a disability then purchase a different Pinto, - 2.3 powered with the C-3.  I had a 2.0 / C-4 in my Pinto when I first got it. It was a tough call whether the Pinto or an old lady with a walker could cross an intersection first.  An automatic behind a 1.6 would be worse.

I drove thinking an old Austin IIRC with ATX on a super small motor and wondered how even possible, the car so slow I also wondered how many lights turned yellow before I got across and being  first in line. Abysmal performance yet it was running fine.......... ......the ATX saps 20% hp right off the bat.

The 1.6l I have is not in a pinto but is the same as the pinto engine.  I understood the C4 was a stronger transmission and more parts were available.  The C3 is a lighter duty transmission.  Is the bellhousing pattern between the 1.6L and 2.0 , 2.3L the same ?

Yes, the bellhousing pattern is the same until the later 2.3's with the upper bolts. I have no idea if a flexplate or converter will work with the 1.6 crank & pilot hole though.

Which later 2.3l were you talking about wouldn't fit ?  I am looking at a 1980 2.3l with a C4 transmission.  Would that bellhousing bolt pattern for my 1.6L

There was a C4 behind an 80 2.3L?

I'm not sure when it changed but the 2.0L bellhousing & early 2.3L have an almost half circle pattern. The later 2.3L has the top 2 bolts of the bellhousing about 2 inches higher than all the rest. You may also need to make alignment dowels that are stepped to mate the late bell to the 1.6
