Where on the 2.3 block would I find the part number?
« on: August 24, 2014, 05:11:12 PM »
Sorry, another goofy question. :-[
For some reason I am OCD'ing about this engine and wanting to know for sure what it came from. I am thinking it is an 86 Mustang, but not sure. :-\

The intake, exhaust (cast iron header), and the bell housing are all Mustang parts, the intake is an E1Z, the other 2 are E6Z. It did not come with a carb or anything else on the intake.

The head has a D4 code, but apparently that code was used on many years, if what I have found online is correct. I haven't yet taken the intake off to see what style the intake ports are.

There is always a chance that these parts were not original to the engine, which is why I am wanting to see what the block code says. I've done a quick look but haven't found anything.

Thanks,
Russ

The D4 head is a 74 casting number with oval ports & a heart shaped combustion chamber.

The E1 is an 81 casting & most probably a D port carb intake that was made for 2.3's from 81 to 83.

I am hoping to find the casting number on the block itself though.

My E3ZE block has the casting number at the top rear passenger side.

There is a machined pad below the "CTP" out of frame where a partial VIN from the original car is stamped.
'72 Runabout - 2.3T, T5, MegaSquirt-II, 8", 5-lugs, big brakes.
'68 Mustang - Built roller 302, Toploader, 9", etc.

Thanks.
My block has a D8 part number. That would make it a 78? This is really confusing to me. Maybe I don't understand the Ford part numbering system as well as I thought.
I'll  look for the partial vin just to see what it has.
