Whats the air fuel ratio and how do I time my 73 pinto
« on: April 24, 2008, 06:36:09 PM »
I want to know what is the air fuel ratio for my 73 pinto.  It has a 2.0 and i just need to know how many turns I need to make to the air/fuel bolt on the carburetor.  And also how would i go about timing my car, it doesn't have any timing marks on the block...
HELP!!!
1973 pinto (gets me from A to B)

A/F ratio is 13.7:1. That wont help you though! You can adjust your carb by sight sound and feel, or you can use a vacuum gauge. First set the timing. there is a timing pointer on the pass side down at the crank pulley. It is made on the lower cover. The timing scale is on the crank pulley. Clean them off and mark both with white paint or white-out works good. Mark the pulley at 10* BTDC. Make sure to unhook and plug the vacuum advance.
To adjust the carb, first set the idle to about 800 RPM. Then turn the air bleed screw in a little at a time untill the engine starts to slow and run rough. Then back it out a little (1/4-1/2 turn at a time) untill it smooths out. Do the other air bleed screw the same way. If you back it out too much it will start to run rough again, go back in a little untill you get the highest RPM and then reset the idle.
If you don't have time to do it right, when will you have time to do it over?

 I thought A/F stoichiometric was 14.7 to 1????

14.7 gallons of air to 1 gallon of fuel...."GAS"

About 9 to 1 for Alcohol or 9 gallons of air to 1 galon of Alcohol.

With the 10% included in fuel "GAS" today my Pintos seem to run lean.
I sure could have used a larger jet on my trip to California....
ESPECIALLY in the mountains... ;D
