Title: Whats normal 302 sounds?
Post by: Glitch666 on May 09, 2014, 12:24:07 AM
The 302 in my mustang II just sounds odd to me. I figured I would ask here since you guys know probably know this engine way better then me. I have very little experience with sbfs. But the gentleman I bought it from said he blew the original 302 in it and had the one thats in it built for him a few years back. He really didnt know much about what went into the motor. He said its always sounded the way it does, which ill get to in a minute. The thing runs great and has plenty of power. Doesn't use oil or smoke either. But it just sounds wrong to me, maybe its just me from working on so many small motors like 2000 and 2300s. Heres a video of it, what do you guys think?

My speakers aren't the best but sure sounds like there's a rattle in there, maybe it has solid lifters that need adjustment, hard to tell????..

Cool guys ill  see if I can get some time to check today. It kinda sounds like it has direct drive timing gears instead of a chain to me. But the video kind of makes it sound different than in person.

Gear drives don't rattle, whine maybe if it's a noisy Jackson??..

I wasn't talking about the rattle being the gear drive. The rattles there but it also makes that whine that increases with rpms

A set of 180 deg headers will make it sound like it was made in JAYPAN. Kinda like a bumble bee. My tunnel port Fairlane had a set of 180 deg Doug headers that took days to put together. They crossed under the pan.

Learned the hard way about them headers, gotta stamp them to speed up the jig saw puzzle, LOL..

Figured it out! The engine has a Jackson gear drive in it, also the tick rattle is the dzzy. The pickup plate is so loose that the pickup hits the reluctor......

Im still getting used to it, starting to sound pretty cool. definitely an attention grabber! Thank for the pointers though lol. I just put a new pick up in my dizzy, no more tick/rattle!
