Title: Whats a good muffler for the 4 cylinder?
Post by: mrmellowgold on October 30, 2013, 10:18:51 AM
I dont really like the way the muffler on my pinto sounds right now... it is not factory, but the first owner put it on. It's like a fart can or something.
What would you recommend? It's a 4 cylinder engine. I want something that dosnt make it sound like a cartoon car, something more like a deeper rumble, but not really loud, but recognizable to people around. Tell me what you think and what you got!

Highly subject to opinion, but I'm running a generic glass pack, and adore it. Are you looking for quiet, loud-but-mellow, or...just not ricey? What does the muffler you're running look like? Is it stainless (from my decades of experience, most 'fart cans' are usually shiny stainless with obnoxiously large tips. lol)?

Can you link us a YouTube vid or a sound clip, that would narrow it down and give us something better from which to base opinions. :)

Also, seeing you're ref'ing a '73, are you 1.6 or 2.0 powered? That will probably make a diff in opinion, as well. :)

Mine, for reference (2.0, stock UK cam, Weber 32/36): https://www.dropbox.com/s/w7wek8pz3w513sc/VID_20130913_191332_739.mp4

I <3 it, you might not. Also, it's a crappy cell vid, sounds better in person. :) lol

Haha, thats exactly how mine sounds!! I do not totally despise how it sounds now, i just want a little bit more of a medium-loud, low-rumble sort of tone. Something that someone can say, "Hey that sounds like that guys Pinto up the road!"
I know it's kinda hard to make a 4 cylinder not sound like it's a lawn mower, but you know...

Problem being that four cylinders are harder to quieten than V-8s, the exhaust pulses are too far apart. A muffler that makes directional changes is usually best for sound reduction but kills power. If using straight thru muffler types then two inline may be necessary. Crawl up under some fours, often they have TWO mufflers under car. My Tempos, Contour and Foci all do.

I've used two straight thrus before to not sound too bad and not super loud either. Space them out a bit from each other.

Has anybody tried this, run a Y pipe off the header to form a dual system with a crossover like a v8, wonder what that would sound like?..
