What is a runabout? I thought I knew
« on: September 04, 2013, 03:46:09 PM »
I went to ebay to find another bobcat script emblem. I saw a photo of a bobcat with a "runabout" script on the side. I thought that runabout was what ford called a pinto hatchback to distinguish it from the trunk model.  My bobcat does not have runabout on it. I did not know that bobcats were runabouts. Bobcats did not have a trunk model so I did not think that the term runabout was used. There was no need to name it differently. Now I find that Mercury also used the term runabout. So now I am confused. My hatchback is not a runabout. How is a runabout bobcat different than a hatchback bobcat that is not a runabout?
I am confused again but that is normal for me.
Bill

P.S.  I need to relocate my bobcat script from the hatch to another location. What other location is common for a "bobcat" script. Photos would be helpful. Thanks for the help.

Is runabout used for any other car besides pinto and bobcat?

Yes!  Ford has used it for at least a century, 1913 Ford Runabout: http://www.modelt.ca/13T-fs.html

"Runabout" by definition:

1 : one who wanders about : stray
2 : a light usually open wagon, car, or motorboat

#1 May define a Pinto that has bad alignment.  Given that Ford ran a commercial with huge fans blowing a crosswind as a Pinto drove by (proving stability) I doubt it is referring to that kind of wandering.

#2 "Light" may accurately refer to a Pinto. "Open" may apply to the hatch after a rear impact.

All kidding aside my recollection was that "Runabout" referred to the fact that a Pinto was well suited to runabout town and accomplish many tasks. The features were easy on gas, small (compared to cars of the day) for easy parking, practical for loading with the rear hatch.

Since Mercury was the upscale division of Ford perhaps (I'm just guessing here) they attempted to separate the Bobcat from the Pinto by not using the term runabout.  Then people became confused (the hatchback concept was rather new at the time) and they later applied the term to the Bobcat to "carryover" the concept.  Or..., the reverse may have occurred. If "Runabout" was applied to the Bobcat they might have eventually elected to distinguish it from the Pinto by dropping the term.  Given that your post did not state the years "Runabout" was applied to the Bobcat it could be either - or none since I'm just speculating (but I think it is a good guess).

Joe, what year is your Bobcat? If I remember correctly, Ford stopped putting the Runabout logo on Pinto/Bobcat hatchbacks in '78 model year (someone chime in if I'm wrong).  :)

One can never have too many Pintos!

Why do you need to relocate the script from the hatch?  If you can't use it where it is intended to go, it would probably be better to leave it off completely.

I am putting on a spoiler and it will cover the logo.  There is only one script on my car. Most People  think it is a pinto. If I leave it off, problem will be worse. I saw an ebay photo that showed it located in front of the driver door. The photo was at a bad angle. I wanted something that would give me a more accurate idea of where to place it. I did not know that it was placed at locations other than the hatch. I would like to keep it as correct as possible.
Thanks

If it were my car and I was relocating the script to the front fender, I would acquire a second script (eBay, or the Classifieds here; someone is bound to have one) for the other side.  Another thought would be if you could bond your single script to the grille somehow.  Personally, I would probably leave it off... anyone who can't tell a '77 Bobcat from a Pinto doesn't know much about cars anyway!

in 75 & 76 teh bobcat logo or script was on the front fenders and on the rear hatch or trunk lid. i have a 78 that i drilled the holes in the fenders for the badges so it would look more like my 75 plus its easier for the general public to figure out its a bobcat and not a pinto!!

if you need location points can take pics for you.

but you will need at least two badges!!

take care

when I added the "Hot Pants" rear spoiler I put my Bobcat emblem on the spoiler...

near as I can tell from pictures in dealer brochures... Runabout and fender emblems were dropped after 1976

I thought about putting it where you did. I still might. I noticed that you installed your spoiler with screws. This is the first time I have seen that. Please tell me about why you did it that way.
Thanks

I have a hood scoop - installed with screws
wheel lip chrome - installed with screws
and the rear spoiler - installed with screws
it started with the wheel lip... rust kept me from normal install, I wanted the wheel lip to hide the rust but the only way to attach was with screws on the outside... so... this Pinto (changed to Bobcat = Pincat) is "screwed"
and before anybody get's on my case about me doing that.... the "Wounded One" is really, really rusty... doors have holes/bottom seam is gone, wheel lips are rusted away and several other issues keeping this one from ever being worth restoring... The black truck bed liner I painted it with... hides a whole-lot-o-rust... it is what it is... a rusty beater that now "looks" kind of cool vs. just a rusty beater

My guess: Cause stainless screws look like rivets from a distance. And when he gets around to it, they also quite perfectly pre-drill rivet holes.

And, they're easy to install. :) lol

more like metal studs is how I think about it... since I had to "screw" the wheel lip on I just was looking for other things to "screw" to complete a look?
