Title: What is a pinto body worth?
Post by: pintoguy76 on March 25, 2016, 12:24:33 AM
I am in need of a shell in good shape to get floor pans and a few other body parts out of. I found one but neither of us knows what is a good sale price for it.  Its just a body, no rear end, suspension, glass, interior, etc. Not even front fenders, in fact the front end has been cut off from the motor mounts forward.  Its good for absolutely nothing but cutting out good body panels. Its supposed to be nearly rust free from what I understand...

What would be an acceptable price to pay for such a thing?

Also, can i use the front half of the wheel wells and lower part of the door jams on my wagon? (the shell is a 74 sedan, my car is a 74 wagon). I know the top of the door jams is different because of the difference in the curvature of the doors at the top, and the rear part is different of course because the rear of the body is completely different, but maybe I can cut out part of the quarters from the sedan and use on my wagon if they will work at all.... still will need the rest of the lower rear quarters  for the wagon, but this will be a good start...

Please let me know asap what I should pay for that shell. i need it badly, my wagon has no passengers rear floor anymore. It was solid a couple years ago i swear. It went down hill fast...

I think price is predicated on where you live.  Meaning rust belt equals greater need.  Still it may be you are actually doing the person a favor (that they don't want you to know) by removing an eyesore.  Given what replacement floors cost, and the extra labor involved in removal in this case, it is my opinion that the shell is worth $100-$300. And that is dependent more upon your need rather than the sellers value.

I've got many "projects" by offering 2-3 times scrap price. I would bet there's about 500lbs., or so, left on it. Use the fact that it's going to be a pain in the.... to load and tow and unload, and how many people are making offers on it(probably not a lot), to hagle that you're doing them a favor at 2x scrap and getting it out of there hair.

The last time I took scrap to sell they were offering less than $.02 a pound for steel and it was closer to $.01. And, a quick check today looks like they are at about $.02 a pound now.  That works out to $10 whole dollars for 500 pounds.  following your 2-3 times price I say it would be generous to offer $30. Now, if he knows that you want/need the floorboards (and he probably does) he will be expecting more.  I'm guessing that most front/rear floor sets new are in the $300-$500 range.

Wow. Around here it's about .20 per lb. on average.

Well, what they give is all about what THEY want to call it.  HMS#1 seems to be going for about  $135 a ton. That works out to under $.07 a pound. But the car body has breakdown issues, paint issues etc and that might put it in the "Unprepared" category that get the $.02 a pound pricing.
